996 Oil Pressure Question

Post by Dennis Morgan »

I have a recently acquired 3.6 996 with 39k and notice the oil pressure appears on the high side - 5 bar above 3000 rpm with a hot engine. The drivers manual refers to a normal running pressure of 3.5 bar do I have a potential problem?
My car was serviced by Porsche East London in March so oil and filter assumed ok.
Your thoughts appreciated

My 928 and 944 both run at 5 bar when revved and at cold. Hot, they drop to 2 bar at idle. It sounds normal to me, but I don't have a 996. I am prepared to swap the 944 for it if you want?

I'll take that as a no then!

I seem to remember to book states a minimum figure of 3.5 bar at 3000 rpm. In other words start worrying if it is below this. Sounds like you have a healthy engine to me.

Just to let you know as generator of this question I had a problem with the oil pressure sender unit ultimately it failed gave me a bit of a shock but a new sender unit is now fitted and my oil pressure is around 3.5 bar as manufacturers spec, my understanding from Promax is that these senders often fail giving spurrios readings

Started getting this today. Failed completely and gave me the fright of my life. Started the engine again and it was ok, but readings are all over the place. Warranty only covers it if it has failed and will not work again, so now it's working I can't claim.
