Just had an inspection of my recently acquired 944 S2 by JMG and they have advised that the rear wheel bearings may need replacement (amongst other things  ). How realistic are these to do at home by a reasonably competent mechanic (me !)?

I am planning on replacing the brake disks/pads and handbrake shoes & cables anyway, so was just wondering whether it's a lot more hassle to do the bearings whilst everything is stripped down. Do I need any special tools to do it?

You will need access to a press to remove/install the bearing in the arm.

The hubs are alloy. If you don't know what your doing you can damage them. May need massive pressure to shift the old ones. I would bite the bullet & get JMG to do them. Discs have to come off anyway so it won't cost a penny more to do that at the same time. You will get a warranty with there work.

I concur with the others you'll struggle to do a rear wheel bearing at home, I'd let someone with a press have the hassle.

Thanks chaps :) . I thought that might be the case, so will defer to JMG (or another garage if they don't get around to giving me a quote  ...)

I would also agree, I had my fronts done at my local garage quite cheaply and they are supposed to be the easiest to do so I would definitely have the rears done for me, I seem to remember breaking the hub nut is very difficult without an large airgun or breaker bar, before you even get to the bearings.
