Thanks

I'll look up some threads with the word "vaseline" in and see what I find.... could be anything!

It does seem that in my case, matters aren't helped with the inner seal clearly being loose and water could clearly be seen dripping from the inside of the seal between it and the metal guide.

I would do the inner seal myself as that looks like a very easy job. Unfortunately, my sunroof doesn't remove without unbolting various items (even our specialist in Norwich couldn't get it to operate as it should) so it looks like a 15 quid bit of inner seal and perhaps some sealant/vaseline is going to cost me an hour's labour or so to install.

Never mind, so long as I get the leak sorted before the winter sets in.

The tilt operation of the sunroof is absolutely fine.

The guy at Autowerke mentioned the problem with me not being able to remove the sunroof (without unbolting various bits) was on account of some micro-switches having failed.

I'm thinking that if I get the new inner sunroof seal installed and sealed in with mastic or similar and also make a tidy job of sealing the outside of the sunroof with some kind of tape that will stick but not damage the paintwork then that should be the end of the water leaks for the time being.

Be carefull that by adding the thickness off masstick or tape, that with new seals it don't allow ur roof 2 sit flush.

Mirco swhich, im guessing it don't retracted? And he has manually removed the cogs and lifting arms 2 unlock the roof. Not a very hard job. A few screws that's all. Just make a note off how many theeht are visauable on the lifting arms and instole the same.

Having read the thread from the beginning again, it sounds like you have might have more than one problem.

1. You may need to push some strimmer cable down the drain holes to make sure that they are all clear.

2. Is the sunroof panel in correct alignment? If you tilt the sunroof open, is it the same height on the left and right side?

3. Inner seal sounds a bit dodgy to me and more than likely needs replacing. If you PM me your e-mail address, I will e-mail you a how to guide on checking the sunroof.

Mine was slightly out of alignment due to the white gear cogs being knackered. Soon as they were replaced and everything was aligned, no more problems. The sunroof panel should be reasonably flush with the roof when shut. If it's not, this is why water may be getting in.

Ben

Does anyone have a documented procedure for replacing the outer seal on the sunroof? I've just ordered a new seal
for my car and before I remove the old one I'd like to get some idea of how to put the new one back into place.

Thanks,

RD.

Erm I don't think you really need a procedure for that one. It's one of the easier repairs to do. The new seal should just push on around the outer edge of the sunroof panel. Simples.

Now there's famous last words if I ever heard them. LOL

If it all goes horribly wrong I'll let you know.

Thanks,

The thing to be careful of when changing the outer seal is flaky paint on the sunroof as the material of the sunroof reacts with the paint sometimes and can cause it to lift which then flakes off when you remove the seal, the other thing to be wary of is making sure it is pushed into all the corners properly before cutting to length or it will be too short.

Appologies if i'm hijacking the thread, but i was just wondering where the best place would be to get suroof seals and gears for my 924. My outer seal has seen better days as the beading is coming out of the seal, and i think the inner seal could probably get replaced at the same time. I have also noticed the sunroof jumps up a little when shutting the doors (sunroof gears perhaps?) and have small water marks on the roof trim near the sunroof at the back. Appart from this it works fine and no other leaks from it either.
Matt.

I've just bought an outer seal from Design911. I hope to fit it this weekend so I'll let you know how it goes.

Try JMG, I'm sure someone on here got theirs from there and said it was good. Think he does freepost too.

Just fitted the sun roof seal I bought from Design911 and all looks to have gone well. The seal needed to be trimmed a
little as it's too long but otherwise it was a straightforward job. The sunroof seems to sits a little higher than it did
before but it's probably back to how it was when new. I've yet to check it for leaks but the seal looks to be of a high
quality so I'm hoping for the best.
