Wayne just did too good a job. All that extra grunt has done for my clutch...........

Off the road pending gearbox rebuild & new clutch. Which means I won't make Strauss on Saturday. Sorry guys.

Now what do i tell Mrs JJ as I'm on holiday from Sunday! No Car. No holiday! Anyone want to buy a pampered '44 thats had far too much spent on it in the last 4 years. Sure it will be for sale soon unless I can find a cheap car quick. :|

You can't sell it? Your never get anything that's worth it, I'm sure you do better off shelving the project 4 now. I think mines costing about 500 a month at least, without petrol or insurance, think off the lease hire car you could get 4 that!

Do you think after ten years, or by the time the compoten have warn out again, there be worth anything? Or you think there suffer the same faite as 924 and be pick up 4 about 500 pounds?

Fto seems quite good value 4 the money and will prob return there outlay. Bit off a hair dressers car.

Nearly worth £500 now!! Looking at a Spec clutch as the stock one can't take it. Will have to get something the missus can drive. Found a Perdua Nippa. (Diahatsu domino) for £600 with 40K miles & full test. 2002. Will cost a bomb if it needs anything though! Can't win.

I'd sell it or break it for parts

Sorry couldn't resist

If you need a loaner for a couple of weeks my old Beemers just sat out the front not being used at the moment, slowly getting into using the 44 as a daily driver before I get shot of the Beemer so it's not being used. I'm down the M1 nr Jct 28 about 90 mins from you and will save you diving into a wreck too quickly just to get mobile.

You can find a decent 3 or 5-series BMW for that money. Get an automatic and it'll be easy for the wife to drive. I was considering buying one and taking my car off the road, but then I just spent the money and had the clutch replaced this week and am back on the road (not that it failed, just had it replaced). It will be on another thread soon.

Needless to say I did all the research on price, and the new clutch was £441 from Frazerpart.

Wasted hippy, that offer has warmed my heart! That's really nice sirportive thing off you. I think a 600 pound BMW, would quickly run in 2 repire costs. Iv just spent more that this week, on a belt, chain change. Still need a new rack and roll bar, new discs and pads.
Think iv got another 5000 2 drop on it b4 I get the condition I want.

40k don't sound like much but a lot off these new cars have a life excencty off 5 years, and around that mileage,

Jj your looking long term then? If ur up in the spec? Didn't think you was compemt with the out put so far?

I know what it's like when you suddenly find yourself off the road and badly need to be mobile, it's too easy to panic buy into a pile of trouble so if it gives JJ a bit of breathing space I'd be more than happy to help out.

Old Beemers have always been good hack arounds for me I run a £250 3 series for a year without a blip and sold it for money back with no MOT. The 96 5 series I have at the moment paid £400 for i've had for 18 months and spent a whopping £100 to keep it going, wish the 44's was like that lol, it's a 4 pot though purposely went for a chain rather than belt as I can't see the point throwing money away on belt changes etc on a regular boring car that is literally just transport. Every other car I've had as hacks have needed constant work but the beemers always keep on going and don't eat money so defo thumbs up from me for those as a cheapie.

Mines a 1996 E34 518i SE runt of the litter the enthuasists and mod boys don't want them, they're considered under powered but are more than driveable as a manual, amazing fuel economy for a big lump of a car and parts are mostly peanuts.

Simple 4 pot engine you can work on them blindfolded and stacks of room under the bonnet it's almost a case of oh wheres the engine then, it's hideously small in a huge engine bay lol. I'm a wedding photographer so I need something that's reliable and can be sorted quickly on the road side if needs be hence why I went for the 4 rather than 6 cylinder cars which do have their weaknesses.

Plenty of loved 518's about 120k with history for £500, I think nothing of jumping in mine and doing a 400 mile round trip there's not too many cheap cars I'd be overly confident in doing that with. Can't say I have the confidence in the 44 yet, she'll have to prove herself on a few runs 1st

totally agree.

My son has just finished uni and got an accountancy job with Grant Thornton - well done him. He needed a decent reliable car, and preferably one with a decent image for visiting clients in. I found him a 'S' reg 316i saloon from a trusted source. Not a spot of rust, unmarked interior, 80000 miles, full mot, serviced, four door, electric windows and mirrors, remote central locking, air con, fog / driving lights, BMW business tape and cd stacker, rear headrests, boot spoiler, unmarked alloy wheels, recent tyres, and it's averaging 37mpg. The car cost £800. As I drove it home I was thinking how I should have had it for myself.

Great buy - we should all have one as a 'just in case' car.

Reminds me of one of my favourite past times, scouring the classifieds and seeing how good a car can be picked up for ~£500. There are some amazing bargains out there.

Here she is 18 months ago 400 quids worth of German engineering with a years MOT and 61k no history but with my background in the motortrade I've slowly started to think it's actually correct, one of the few fleabay buy it now bargains. I doubt I'll lose a penny on it when i stick it back on fleabay in a month or so might even make a wee profit, that's what you call cheap motoring

 Thanks for the offer. I have noway to get to you anyhow. Actually I should break it! It would be cheaper. Cheaper to drive it off a cliff. Already ordered the parts from Lindsey racing. Spec clutch & fitting kit. New slave & sensor wiring harness as I know mines had it. Also output bearings for the gearbox. Thats about 1K s worth of bits. Still needs a new cam & vernier wheel but I will get there. I seriously toyed with an LS1. But I can't see 400hp in a 944 working for long. I need a daily drive. Even if it held together for long enough my license would be screwed for sure. If it's a weekend toy then thats different. Discovered why Perduas are cheap. You can't get parts for them since the credit crunch! Will borrow a company car next week & try & find a Seat/Skoda/VW that won't break the bank.
This will be a hell of a nice car when it's finished! The downside to tuning a '44 is other componants become stressed & then don't live as long as they should. Which is why I'm not going the LS1 route. After a year it would need a new gearbox. New driveshafts. etc. etc. :blackeye:

JJ dont buy one of those Perdua shite things, you could get a lovely Volvo estate for that money.I bought a nice 940 turbo estate a year ago complete with tow bar and I m up in Scotland on holiday with it at the moment.Tons of room for all you want to carry and these things just run and run. The last one I had (240 estate) for 10 years and it cost me very little to run! :D
