Hi guys,
i've noticed that my camshaft seal is leaking and has oil dripping down the side of the engine onto the alternator (not onto v belt pulley though, i dont think). would the oil cause any problems with the alternator, or would it be ok just to remove, degrease and refit? I will be replacing the oil seal asap. Have also noticed that when its wet and rainy the belt sometimes sounds like its slipping when i start it up, possibly just re-tension the belt?

While i remember, the brakes sqeal a bit when its been raining and the car sitting for a few hours too. Had them checked by HI-Q few weeks ago and the said they seemed ok (but they only managed to check fronts as they didnt have a big enough socket to remove rear drums). I did wonder if a front caliper may be starting to stck a little?

By the way its a 2.0 n/a 924. Any input appreciated.

My son had a similar problem on his MGB (cough) last year. We stripped and cleaned up the alternator and all was well. If you leave it covered in oil, it will fail, so give it a go, what have you got to lose?

Fan belt is easy to adjust. If you find that the alternator pulley does not line up with the other pulleys, then you will have wear in the bushes, you will need new ones (I think still available from OPC!!).

Brakes, sounds like the discs are rusting up slightly in the damp weather. Scrubs off after 2/3 applications of the pedal. This is normal.

Rear hub nut is very tight!!! You will need to loosen it with a big breaker bar, but put the wheel back on and lower to the ground first (use a socket throught the wheel centre).

You can check the rear shoes through a couple of inspection holes in the back plates (you will need to crawl right under the car for access and use a torch). You will however need to take the drum off if you want to look at the hydraulic cylinders etc.

Thanks for the info David, sorry about the late reply. Have removed and cleaned the alternator, seems to be working fine altough i did find the alternator to engine earth wire is starting to get a bit frayed. Also have replaced the cam seal.
