Hi all,

My girlfriend has a rather lovely 968 that has not been used in a while, so with the offer of use of it in exchange for looking after it I jumped at the chance. Lucky me :)

Any way I have just given the old gal a good service (the car not the girlfriend, well ??!!!) All is well with it and it drives just like a porsche of that era should. My question is how often should the cam belt be done on the 968, it is a standard model, not a turbo. Also if it needs doing what are the other items recommended while I am there, eg water pump, tensioners, bearings, balancing belts.

Also it needs new front bearings, I dont have access to a manual on the car just yet, if I have access to a hydraulic press how much of a job is it to replace them? I would like to point out I am not a novice when it comes to car, but I have never played with a 968.

All advice welcome, thanks.

Belts are absolutely max 45K & 5 years, generally most go for 36K & /or 3 years. Idlers & tensioners changed with it & water pump every other belt change. Check the timing chain & tensioners at the same time & bin & replace if not 110%. This is very important as it is not part of the service schedule & if left it trashes the cams which are big money, or worse breaks taking the head & valves with it.

Wheel bearings aren't difficult but you may need to heat the hubs to get the old ones out. I used a BFH to get them out & in, as I don't have a press. They are standard tapers so easy enough to do or may just need greasing & adjustment.

Hi there. Girlfriend sounds like a keeper! This post has some links to some videos for changing the front bearings on a 944 turbo. Think it will be much the same for the 968.

http://forums.tipec.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=7710&hilit=wheel+bearing

I would perhaps inspect the bearing first and regrease and adjust before deciding to change them. Might be they just need adjusted.

Mike

Thanks for the info guys. I assumed the bearings would be a press in sealed unit and not the tapered adjustable type. Should be easy to do :)

Yes the girlfriend is definately a keeper, the car is just a bonus.

2 questions:

1: how do I remove the crankshaft drive pulley without damaging it to renew the oil seal behind it. The nut is out with the help of a flywheel lock but the inner most pulley of the 3 is well n truely stuck. Lots of wd40 on it at the mo. A large pry bar is not the answer as it bent the teeth.

2: Can I change the cam chain slippers with out removing the cams, I have been lead to believe this from American web sites on the cars but they do not give enough info on how to do this. I have so far removed the oil feed pipe but cannot release the tension in the device to remove the upper slipper. Once the upper slipper is off I believe you can remove the whole vario cam device allowing inspection/ replacement of the lower slipper.
