Having just picked up a set of original Design 90s to replace the Boxster wheels currently on my car, I will be getting them refurbed ready for some new rubber. I have a pretty good idea which make/model of tyres will be fitted, but would appreciate some thoughts on the size options.

As I understand it, the standard fit tyres for 7J front & 8J rears is 205/55 and 225/50 respectively, but having checked a few tyre sites on the web, the rear ones don't seem to be appropriate for 8" rims (recommended only on 6-7.5") . As an alternative, I could go for 245/45s, which are recommended for 8-9.5" rims and have the same rolling radius. If I did this, it seems sensible to go for slightly wider ones on the front as well to match, which would mean 225/50s.

So, the question that I've got is does anyone else run 225/50/16 fronts and 245/45/16 rears? If so, any problems with fitment or extra load on the power steering? Alternatively, would the 225/245 option mean that the car was 'over-tyred' (to quote a classic Vauxhall advert !!)

have you tried Kumho?

I had 225s on the front and replaced them with 205/55 Kumho's and there was a big improvement. When I was at the tyre shop I'm certain the chap said he could also fit 225/50 Kumho's on the rear too - but that'll be when the current ones are worn out...

When you say you noticed a big improvement, was that because you went back to the standard size, or switched to Kumhos, do you think?

Yup of course Porsche didn't know what they were doing I'd go with what the guy in the tyre dealers told you

225/245 Fr/Rr were Turbo sizes & knacker the steering feel or certainly did on my car. I run Goodyear F1 GSD3 205/55 fr & 225/50 rears & it is very balanced & pleasant to drive.

Thanks Jim . Yes, I know that you should always stick with the way that the manufacturer intended, but I can never resist the opportunity to go up a size . I will follow your advice and stick to the 205/225 combo, which will also save me some money to spend on something else !!

I have to agree. I have just put the same on again, after all the research I did last time I guess that buying the same again cannot be a bad thing. The last set lasted 22000 miles. The new ones cost me £368 fitted.

What size were your boxster wheels? It be intersteding 2 see if you think it was an improvement.

Boxster wheels are something like 6J ET52 fronts and 7J ET40 rears, with standard size tyres. It therefore won't be so much the different sized tyres that I might notice, but the correct offsets and wheel sizes will hopefully feel better (and defnitely look more in keeping with the style of the car )

Just been sensible and ordered some 205/225s from Camskill. I have gone for Toyo T1Rs, as I have had good experiences with them on previous cars, and a bargain price of around £290 (excluding fitting, but this will be done my my wheel restorer )

Got Toyo T1 R's on my 220 no prolems and seem to wear well, i have P Zero's on the Turbo S again no problems.

Uniroyal Rainsport 2 all round for me. Haven't lost grip in the car since putting them on.
