Some may remember my cooling fan relay us boncing and chattering. A replacement is £150.

So Iv tryed clean the conctors. Iv also just swaped it with another old one and it's still chattering. So ethir the old new one is also a flaut or nethir is and it's some thing else. I'm in Kent, if anyone local could let me try my relay in there car 2 see if the relay is at fault ? Would greatly be appreacted

Sounds like a sticky relay to me. Take the relay out and give it a couple of hard clouts against something solid. This will invariably get the relay working again temporarily until you can get a new one.

£150? Where was that quoted price from???

Think that's the going rate 4 cooling fan relay as it's a Porsche part. I did shop around, there even 50 on eBay and 20 years old. Now iv got 2 I will give it a try. I hoped this 2nd one would sort it. I did a bit off reading up on relay and 2 much or 2 less power can cas it 2 bounce and evenlty stick or just become broken.

I would suggest that the problem is not the relay at all but a poor connection somewhere in the wiring or fuses . The coil to the cooling fan relay has a resistor across the terminals which should be checked to see if it still has the correct resistance. I would use a schematic and multimeter and check the associated fuses ,relay socket terminals , connections and associated wiring and also check and clean the earthing points . Spelling - we've been through this when Terry originally joined the forum. He has dyslexia, so we accept the way his postings are written and work it out for ourselves.

I would agree with Peanut's suggestion that it's not the relay, the relay acts on the information sent to it, therefore it must be being sent signals to engage / dis-engage etc by some dodgy connection somewhere.

Sorry Terry I wasn't aware of your dyslexia . My stepson also has it. Saying that my Wife's spelling is also atrocious so she types her messages first in MS Word then uses the spell check( which is pretty good at offering spelling solutions )then copy- pastes the message . Not that it is much help on a cellfone though
Don't worry chum we all know what you meant.

Terry what year and model 944 do you have ? does it have Air conditioning fitted ? The reason i ask is that the cooling fan wiring schematic for non A/C cars is quite different to A/C cars .

Hay penut, what's your name? Or would penut do. Iv havnt had a chance 2 try the information you have provide. Iv had a few other more pressing cocerns. Iv mainly been using my phone while traveling 2 and from work, which is a 240 mile round trip each day. By the time I'm home iv not got time 2 use the pc. See as you felt quite affened by my spelling, which isn't really helped, when posting from a mobile. I would off submitted my reply via a pc once had the chance. We have all help others with are knowage or knowage gained via expressing the same problem there now faced with. And I have never expected 2 re read a post and find a letter off gratitude. It's a helpfully forum, and quite a friendly one. Let's keep it that way.

Like iv said iv had plently time while traveling 2 and from work, which is posted up via a mobile, seeing as you requested proper grammar, my next response on that thread was going 2 be upload via a pc and spell checked. Really not much 2 add till I had at least put ur sirguestion 2 use. Maybe send me your address so I can post you a thank you card? By really all joke a side. Thanks. So you think cleaning the grounds may work? How would I do that, remove bolt clean the areas of contact with? I did use some nail file stuff ( emery ) ??? 2 clean the pins on my relay. Which I now have 2 off so I could try opening one but like you and I have said, it's probably the power been sent.

Got a can off contact cleaner, and a list off the grounds.

These cars live and die by their Earths or Grounds . Grounds are vital They are just as important as a good 12v+ supply. I cannot stress too much how important they are. If your battery / starter grounds are poor your engine won't turn over fast enough to start. The ECU has to see 225 Rpm minimum on cranking in order for the car to start.

You should clean all your earth points using the picture I supplied . The most important 3x are GPl, GPll, and GPlll

Also vital to clean the earth strap between the rear of the engine and the firewall just above the clutch housing (near the wiper motor)
Make sure you put some cloth or towel underneath the strap so that the bolts do not accidentally drop into the clutch housing.

It will take you a couple of hours but your car will start and run noticably better.

Use a flat file and course wet n dry etc until the earth point and cable spade connectors are nice and shiny.
