Hi all

i am a virgin porsche owner, this will be my first. I already have made the deal and i believe i got a good deal, Its a 1988 ventiller in pearl white with 119000 on the clock and apparently oodles of service history....Yes......an ebay bargain i hope.

I pick the car up on Friday, and the convo's i have had with the current owner have got me very excited. Please let me know wht your thoughts are.....ebay link attached.

Looks good. Please please check that the chain & tensioners have been done. They are not part of the service schedule & at this mileage need changing. If they go it'll write off the engine!

Don't drive it until it's had a thorough check over. Belts, water pump, oil cooler, cam sprockets, the lot. No such thing as a bargain Porsche! As Jim says a good sort out now will save you loads of pain later. Good luck with it. Rather like the S.

Just sold my 944S, well delivering it tomorrow to its new owner, had it 6 years to the day and enjoyed every moment, as mentioned belts, cam chain/tensioner and water pump are very important, go enjoy and keep it above 4k revs for max fun

Unfortunately the car had to be driven 200 miles to my house, which to be honest was a pleasure, apart from a clutch pedal that kept sticking, and not returning, and a sloppy gearbox......stick in a bucket of rice pudding came to mind.

I will get it looked over, anyone know of a reputable resonably cheap garage in the birmingham area that will look at it? need to get a place i can trust to use.

all the trimmy bits and lights not working etc are just trivial i can play with, but i will get the big guns lookin at the oretensioners etc.

EMC in Saltley replaced my clutch for less than most places quoted just for parts, speaking to the guys they seemed to know their onions so I would recommend them

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I hope you love the car as much as others do. You'll get a lot of help in the forum.

Enjoy the ride.

Well, had a great day tinkering and finding so many other things to fix.....i see now what you guys mean about the £1500 budget required to keep these in trim. I found a few suprises today, like the washers dont work anymore, although they did when i picked the car up, so first thing, fill the bottle.......ahhhhhhh, hole in it near the headlamp mechanism. Fuse checked etc, so will replace the pump at the same time i replace the bottle.

Sills are good with a few surface rust areas, which i will get treated before it gets worse.

The car is booked in for a belt change and tensioner kit etc.....can anyone tell me exactly what fails because i keep hearing different stories, like water pump change every 2000 miles etc etc..

My big concern now is the sticking clutch and sloppy gearbox, these will get checked out at the same time.

Hi,belts should be changed every 48000 miles or every 4 years if mileage is less.Water pump is lifed at about every 2nd belt change, and tensioners and rollers too.Sounds like you got yourself a decent motor but be prepared to spend a bit on it over the next 12 months or so until you get it right. All 944s are getting a bit worn out by now so obviously things will need replacing.Give the old girl a bit of TLC then get your foot planted and enjoy it!! :D
Dont know what you mean by "sticking clutch",but sounds like maybe the system needs bleeding or maybe you need a new master cylynder or perhaps a slave cylinder. :)

Saw you tonight on roundabout above J4 on M5 at about 5pm, tried to get along side to wave but traffic had other ideas, car looks very tidy, and quite low, enjoy

Yeah that was me, i was taking my little fella for his virgin cruise, he did later open the door on the bin but we wont go there!!!!!

I only live down the road from there so thats my test route....... it is low but i havent had the wheels off yet to saee what shocks are on it.

I only take it on short runs as i am not sure of the cam belt history so am waiting for it to go in and get sorted.......on that note, i have been quoted £235 + vat for the belt change only, is this about right? or should i get other quotes?

Latest quote is around £500 + VAT from EMC, to do the cam belt and the tensioner kit.......then again approximateley the same again to change the master cylinder and clutch slave to sort the clutch problem, but they need to look at it first.

Thats without the sloppy gear stick issue.....joys of porsche ownership hey..........

EMC seem to know their onions, when mine was having the clutch done they rang me to see if it was ok to test drive it as it was raining and they hadn't seen such a clean 944 for a long long time
