Sorry Jim, That wasn't a dig at you. Drove one across Belgium & it was a memorable drive. It was only the V6 but I had a good time monstering Mercs in it. Then picked up a supercharged XKR & brought it back on the ferry. It's the walnut dash that does it. Very old school. But I do like these cars. Total madness that good ones can be found for as little as 2K at the moment. (one owner FSH even under 80K miles.) There pretty easy to fix as well. They just use more petrol than a 944 by about one third. Even then may work out similar running costs as there so much newer. They are better made than the new German brigade. A sea change from the old jags in build quality. A lot of car for the money. :D

I'll let you off then. Mine is a diesel so 35MPG everywhere although my ARO Paul did show 44MPG + through France to/from Le Mans Classic as he drives a tad more gently than me.

How come you need a clutch at 76k miles?

76K does sound a little light, I managed 140 when last it was changed.
Clutch replacement is 400 for the bits and it's listed at something like 14 hours by Porsche.
Its a lot of work.

Rubber donut in centre breaking up, juddering and backlash, don't want to destroy the pinion

Quite similar to a fairly common BMW problem known as the 'quibo' (no idea why)

Except guibos can be changed easily as they are on the propshaft, unfortunately the rubber cush on the 944 is inside & part of the clutch so biggggg labour bills.

I had my clutch replaced at the first service after buying by 'S', total bill was a nadge over £2000, although that did involve a lot of other work as well ( including alll the belts, chains etc).

I think the clutch kit itself was approx £350.

That was a couple of years ago, all thats been required since is consumables (brake pads, shocks etc), just like any other vehicle.

Just changed the gear stick gaiter on mine with one off eBay (topgaiters) they only supply the gaiter but do send fitting instructions with it and offer them in various colours. By heck it's a tight fit but well worth a coupla quid and 15 minutes for a quick cosmetic tidy up.
