 Post subject: driveshaft queery

Hi Can anybody tell me if the outer driveshaft joint is more prone to failure(clunk noise)rather than the inner joint.
I replaced the inner joint previously and Iam confused as to if the outer is noisey or if it is a suspension clonk. cheers

Easiest way to tell is hold the driveshaft and try to rotate the wheel, if there is a play, the UJ is worn. Best doing the lot in my experience, anything over 100k with originals will be getting tired!

Is the outer joint difficult to replace?

Easy job if you can get the bolts out. Depends who put them in! (As in do they have any heads left.) Buy them new complete from euro car parts. £50 each. New bolts needed too.

JJ, GSF are cheaper at about £38 I think plus VAT,

Some come with bolts, grease etc. others don't. The bolts are in excess of a pound each so quickly makes a difference. Clean the heads out with brake cleaner before you try unbolting them! :shock: Use a torque wrench to retighten.

PS Clean & strip both shafts whilst you are there, if one is iffy the others maybe too. You'll need at least one complete pot of CV joint grease to do all 4! :o

Thats good news with the Tipec discount! Last time I asked they didn't have any or know when they would. Need 4 to put in with my fresh gearbox. :roll:

Maybe I made hard work of the job but when I took the offside shaft off my turbo it was awkward to get it around the oil cooler loop.

Isn't the oil cooler loop just for cars fitted with an LSD? Sure mine doesn't have one.

Yup Turbo only, not LSD as I have an S2 box in the garage with LSD but no cooler..
