HI

I picked up a cheap set of oval dash instruments recently which included an mpg dial - my current dash does not have this feature. I was having difficulty getting all my oroginal instruments to work given the car had not run for 5 years or so - but cleaning all the earths brought them back to life.
Anyway - would this spare dash insert fit if I did want to replace my current instruments? Would the mpg dial need an extra feed and if so from where? (i've only seen older VW ones which had a vacuum pick up from the inlet manifold for this instrument).

Thanks

Ian

VW of the period derived MPG from the injector timing, so I'd guess as it's VDO instruments & Bosch management that the 944 would do the same. As for whether it is in the loom.... um not sure & the manuals are in the garage at the mo.

Thanks Jim - I guess the easier answer is to fit it and find out - but having just got all the gauges to work (at last!) I am loathe to replace at present.
Will do so if a fault develops I think....

Didn't the 968 have this mpg thingy?

Swopping gauges is very straightforward once you get the pod out but if the mpg is going to work then you will need to connect it. Do you have the whole dash or just individual instruments?

I have the whole instrument pod - and its not too difficult to change them, I agree, but given I have a few other jobs to do first and the uncertainty that it would work, its falling down the list of 'things I must do' - my first job is to replace the failed thermostat!

Yes, it was a 1986 model year feature.

my 1984 model had the mpg needle and guage - in the midle of the rev gauge - not very accurate tho as i believe its just a vacuum gauge!

All early (series one) cars had an economy gauge, but the guage on 1986 model year (series two) cars is different.

For information - I swapped these today and the 86 dash works fine in an 89 car - including the mpg gauge.
Finally i have a stable temp gauge and odometer.
Cheers
Ian

So where did the feed for the MPG guage come from?

Don't know where the mpg feed came from - assume the wiring exists in the loom and porsche never bothered to delete it from models post 86.
