911 - 993 or 996
Hi all you 911's. My action plan was to start at the bottom and work my way up. I've had my 944 for 11 months, and I'm now looking to take the next step on to the 911 ladder. It was only when I started looking I realized there were so many different types. I'm looking to shell out aroung £12-15k and have to confess that I really like the 993 model, but to my mind they actually look to be quite a bit more expensive than a 996 which seems bizare. The question is at around £15k am I going to get a dog whichever model I choose, and are there any particular features/problems common to either model which I should look out for ??

Hi, glad you are going 911, however, its very unlikely you will buy anything decent in terms of a 993 for £15k , you see the odd one advertised but almost always there will be a catch. You may find a reasonable 996 for that money, the 996 is just more plentifull because there were many more built and coincided with boom time in Britain. I would rather pay circa £19-20k for an average 993 than £15k for a very average 996, anyway , good luckmikebooth wrote:Hi all you 911's. My action plan was to start at the bottom and work my way up. Re: 911 - 993 or 996
well as you're asking the question in the watercooled section... buy a 996 !
Seriously, they are very different cars, as I'm sure you are aware.
best thing is to look at as many as you can to see which type 'floats your boat'
I personally don't 'get' this aircooled vs watercooled ark - just buy what you like!

I think you may have answered your own question.
YOu want to start at the bottom and work your way up. SO go for a 996 and then after that a 993 SIMPLES
Seriously though for the price a reasonable, well sorted 993 that is not going to cost a packet to get right would require a few more £££££££s
However 996 maybe another story, there could be something in that price range?

Re: 911 - 993 or 996
I think after the refinement and performance of a 996, the 993 may be a let down, especially when its loads more money for an inferior car

You want to step up ?
Buy a very good 250 944 Turbo, fit KW 3 suspension, then get it to level 2 tuning, remap, 3 fuel pressure regulator, dual port wastegate.
Much quicker than all but the extreme 911,s more practical and a better long distance tourer all for 9/10k..........No Brainer !

For £15k a 993 will be tough, a 996 do-able. How about a 964. Awesome cars and within your budget with change to spare. Or maybe go back a bit further and get a 3.2 Carerra 1984-1989. They are great cars.
