hi there , i have a 1981 5 speed 924. it appears to have a leak from the tank and i am thinking of getting it out and replacing it.

does the gearbox have to come out to get the tank out ?

and advice ?

has anyone contemplated taken it out from above by reomving the boot floor ?

If it is has a leek I'd suggest that it is a plant Assuming it is a leak then it is quite common on the early 944/924 as it is a steel tank rather than the later plastic ones.
Yes pretty sure the box & beam have to come out on a 924, you'd have to cut the boot floor out & weld it back in which is much more work than dropping the box.

removeExhaust
remove drive shafts
removed fuel pipes and bleed
remove fuel sender electricals
remove spline connector from torque tube to gearbox
remove bolts from casing to gearbox
remove mount bolts
lower slowly and move back whilst lowering
should drop enough to lower and out of the way.
remove tank straps
lower tank

if i remove the old metal tank will any of the more modern plastic tanks fit in ok ?

Apparently not but a new steel one is £1350 + VAt from OPC and the plastic one is not an option.

Porschapart do a refurb tank for a reasonable sum. Otherwise SerckMarston the radiator people can do refurbs through your local branch.

Thanks for that Jim, never thought of SerckMarston, although I have had a couple of radiators reconned by them

I used to love sending heat exchangers from air handling units ( imagine a 6ft by 8ft car radiator ) to Serck for repair. Their main workshop was in Kendal and they used to come back in the crate with mint cake. All that sugar and the thing was back together in minutes.

A 924 can be adapted to accomodate a plastic fuel tank, but it isnt a straightforward replacement.
