Hi All - I've jumped in feet first with my first impulse buy of a Porsch 944. The car needs a new battery - I assumed it would be an easy item to purchase and change, but before I do I could do with some expert advice. The battery is in the boot of the car and not under the bonnet as the owner manuals I have read seem to indicate. There is also a bottle at the side of the battery with a pipe going into the side. The bottle says only common gas batteries should be used. This isn't something I've come across before. Searching the net for Porsche 944 batteries to buy non of them seem to mention this little pipe. Can anyone advise?? Hope this description wasn't to vague.

Many thanks
Ian

Firstly hi and welcome

That sounds like either an original battery or a genuine replacement.

The Batteries with breathers are very expensive, so most use a normal replacement from Halfrauds or similar.
Be careful the klisting for the 944 in the Halfords book is wrong it should be an HB010 the one listed is too tall.

Thank you so much Jim - Having bought the car and got it home you realise how much you don't actually know - to be able to draw upon the knowledge of the forums expert members will be a massive help and support for me.

If I replace the current battery with a normal one do I need to remove the gas bottle that is at the side or just leave it there disconnected?

Regards
Ian

Just leave it disconnected.
Eurocarparts or GSF will stock Bosch Silver batteries. These are very well recomended.

I had to replace a boot battery in my 944 back in the nineties. Went to a battery /tyre place and this is what the guy told me:

'I could be nasty and put a new battery in, but the Porsche requires a special battery that doesn't emit any odours/smells as it is inside the cab.' He sent me to another place thar had the correct type.

I don't know if anyone else has heard this, or maybe modern batteries have changed. I can't remember what the battery looked like now...

When you say you just bought one for £54 - do you mean a normal battery or a battery with a breather pipe connection?

ive got a bosch silver in mine, still good and its 17 years old!

its a bit tall and the side flap on the boot carpet sticks up a bit, but i'll live with that.
