I've just bought a pair of 'leather' seats from a breakers for my 944. They came out of a 944 cab and just looked dirty. Since I've cleaned them up they dont look like leather, it's very hard, although they may have been just heavily re-coloured. Anyone know if Porsche actually made a full PVC seat for the 944?

I don't know of any full vinyl seats but im sure someone else on here can answaer that. I have half vinyl and half material seats but the vinyl is very soft to the touch, the real giveaway that its not leather is it dosn't crease at all, and it has a stronger texture to it as leather will smooth out a little with use. It could still be leather but maybe it needs a good feed to soften the material up again :-)

The front of the seats will be leather the backs are vinyl. They could have been re-covered in vinyl.

The leather is quite tough compared to modern day equivalent and might need a bit of conditioning to make it supple.

If you have a look at that price list I posted there were 3 options.
Leather facings - so just seat facings was 500 odd. All leather seats were nearly 1900 and a full leather interior was nearly 3K.
Most likely therefore is that the facings are leather and the rest not. The colour is however painted on so if you clean too vigorously you can take it off. I think gliptone products come recommended for making old leather more supple.

That's the answers to the question, if there was no option for full PVC then they must be leather, all be it a little hard. I cant see anyone re-covering them in PVC. Thanks for the input guys.

My S has half leatherette, half linen pinstripe and they have stood the test of time better than most of the leather seats i've seen on other 944s, some S2s i've seen have full fabric/velour seats so that must have been an option as well

Fabric was the default setting and then you started paying for the leather.
As someone said there are certainly half leather options - possibly older cars?

Fabric centres with vinyl sides were standard and everything else was a cost option, including all fabric fascias. Virtually all 'leather' (944) cars will be leather-faced with vinyl rears and all vinyl rear seats (Ive also sean vinyl early European cars, although thats not really what we're talking about here).

I havent ever seen what I know to be a factory vinyl late style seat, although I have seen a set from a North American car, where they certainly appeared to be original: although they may simply have been an unusually good quality refurb.
