what's a 912

Post by Drjonnycatbiscuit »

What is a 912? and are they any good?
I only ask because I recently saw a 912 for sale and was tempted because of the similarity in looks to the 911.
I seem to recall it was around a 1969 model, and claimed to be a 1600cc (??)

It is a 911 with a late 356 engine, so it's 4 cylinder not 6 & obviously much less cc.
Reckoned to be a sweet handling car. Helen will be along in a mo as she owns.

Oh dear...

As above and they are a great well balanced car to drive.

There early cars where 90BHP + and the factory did print all the details stating lower as the 911T base 911 model was 110BHP and it just didn't look too good to see a car for alot more money not that more in performance..

Torque is what you get between a 911 and a 912 with that extra two cylinders.

A modern 912 motor can now be built to a nice and steady and reliable 118-120BHP and with the current way in which we are going 1900cc you can be looking at 160BHP

Great cars and well understated a camp I am happy to have been a big part of..

1969 is quite rare in a way they made less and the 69 cars are LWB cars the change happened to both 912 and 911 in 68 the 69 912 has a decent spec and basicly is a 911T with a 4 pot. Just watch things like rear discs as they are one year only and expensive..

Thanks for the info folks - probably going to leave it as it's out of my price range at the moment, what with Christmas/New Year debts to pay off etc... :(

Brilliant little cars with 1598cc of flat four engine. SWB are the preferred type and early ones (65 to 67) are supposedly better as they have thicker shells.

I've had mine for nearly 4 years and have entered both 2007 and 2008 Norwich Union Classic Tours as well as completing the 2007 Cape to Cape Tour to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Now getting it ready for the HRCR Clubman's Championship and the Poppy Rally around Ypres.

Definitely not for sale or disposal.

Hi guys,

just a quick addition, the 912 was briefly resurected as the 912E from 1975 - 1976 in the impact bumper style.

it carried a flat 4 cylinder 1971cc fuel injected engine in the 911 coupe narrow body style.

There were only 2099 ever produced and all in LHD including a few Targas too!

I think there are about 12 in the Uk at the moment.

If you come to Gaydon, I'm sure you'll see a number of 912's with owners who will be delighted to convert you to 912 ownership.
