Advice please - wanting to remove the cam cover off my S2, to fix some very slight oil mist/leaks, and to clean off the flaking paint and 'orrid colour ! Do I need to undo the high pressure fuel lines that cross over the rear of the head ? If so, what's the best way, will the feed pipe spray petrol out under pressure ? If I wrap a rag around the joint to soak-up the excess will that work ? Going to get the cover bead-blasted to clean it and re-spray in black crinkle finish !
Any recommendations for paint I can buy from factors or car shops ? Thanks in anticipation, Smiffy -

99% sure you can remove the cover without removing the fuel lines.

I managed to get the cam cover off my 944S without removing anything apart from a bracket at the rear of the head, I had mine blasted and powder coated at an alloy wheel refurbishers in Birmingham for about £40 IIRC

Update on the cam cover project ..... Removed it yesterday evening, I did undo the fuel pipes as it made removal easier. They were very tight, but very little fuel seeped out. As well as the cam cover gasket, I've got the rings for the spark plug tubes and the "cushions" for the location bolts, where a couple of them are leaking oil.
On removal of the cover, I was surprised to find that it's painted inside too - looks like gold was the original colour ..... and that's bubbling and flaking off on the inside  - that won't be doing the oil-ways much good !!
Sent the cover away to Chester Auto Transmissions for them to bead blast the paint off - inside and out, and then repaint the outside in black crinkle finish ..... well that's the plan  !!

Hi,

Don't want to ask a stupid question here but...

Can you still run the car without the cam cover on? I'm assuming that you can do as its a cover. Mines looking pretty scabby and would like to get it shot blasted and polished.

Its a cover but it covers the cam shafts which normally run with oil being fed up to them so I would suspect there would be a lot of oil spraying around if you run without the cover, hence the need for a cover seal and the spark plug seals etc. Not to mention the dirt that would enter your engine via the top end.

Thanks for clarifying that for me.

I’d love to see some pictures of the crinkle finish paint. What colour are you going for?

are you coming to Gaydon ? I bought another cam cover for mine when I got it powdered, yours for a tenner, I can bring it to Gaydon to save postage if you want it

Update on the cam cover paint job - got the paint from Frost Renovators - http://www.frost.co.uk & in the nice warm weather over last weekend it made for a good "wrinkle" finish ! Let's see if I can insert the piccy .......

Very pleased with the result - polished the retaining bolts & caps, just invested in some V-Power ready for another sunny weekend :bounce:
