so...just MOT'd, serviced and taxed (well I will tomorrow) my G reg S2 and been told that there's a lot of corrosion in the brake discs which will need doing pretty soon and cost a fair bit to sort out (or take someone who knows what they're doing a lot of time apparently). Also a couple of rust spots on either side under the door which needs sorting out. This is making me think I might actually sell it to someone mechanically minded (rather than me who has to pay people to fix this stuff for me!)

apparently there's nothing else wrong with it at the moment, the garage assures me - and I'd hope so, having spent a lot of money on it since buying it. Nothings been ignored or done on the cheap so I'm happy that I'm passing on a good example. Its been looked after by Elite MotorTune in Northampton since I've had it.

Interior is very good bar a couple of things - one small cigarette burn on the back seats, left hand speaker cover has lost its lugs but I still have it, steering wheel stitching is going in a couple of places and has a minor scratch in the middle.

Has a very nice Alpine IDA X100 stereo in it (with sound processor and bluetooth unit) at the moment that I can sell with the car (but I want a sensible price for it) or I can remove it and replace with the original stereo.

Other stuff - alarm has been replaced by a Toad, I have a brown leather boot cover, don't have full service history but I do have a LOT. I think thats about it worth mentioning

I've tried to be as honest as I can and will upload photos when I pick it up from the garage tomorrow.

No idea what would be a fair price - would appreciate advice. I've spent thousands on it since buying it about 18 months ago, and put about 5000 miles on it (its clocked 123000 if I recall correctly)

Possibly the most fun car I've ever owned, a pleasure to drive and great performance. Always been warmed up nicely since I've had it (and the previous owner assured me he did the same). Only reason I'm selling is that the work that needs doing sounds easy but timeconsuming and I think an enthusiast could do this much cheaper than me, who has neither the time or skill to do it myself. That and I fancy either a 911 or a Tuscan 6 .

I'm not certain I will sell it as I have a friend who might sort it out for me but would appreciate any advice/guidance on fair price. TBH if I do, I'd rather sell it for an ok price to someone who will look after it and fix the bits that need doing properly, than a higher price to someone who will drive it into the ground. Hence why I'm posting on here.

TBH work sounds pretty trivial. Discs on an S2 are very easy, even easier than the earlier cars & if the paint is caught quick then that should be a quick fix. Given some of the issues people struggle with this all seems small beer.

Yes I would agree with Jim, the discs are easily done and not too expensive (@ £400) and if it is only the door bottoms then this can be repaired without needing to do the whole door as you can spray up to the door protector.

I've been quoted a lot more than that to do the discs

re the rust, its the wing rather than the door - in a few spots on each side.

having got it back now, MOT also has a couple of advisory items: play in Macpherson strut and play in anti roll bar

wondering if it might be worth getting a second opinion on what needs doing (and how much it will cost) - can anyone recommend a good place near Northampton?

Don't be put off by a few little jobs. It looks a nice car and has low mileage.

I've just had the rear discs and pads and handbrake shoes replaced. All parts from Euro Car Parts and prices include VAT (always ask for discount after they give you the price).

Rear Discs (original equipment manufacturer) £44.70 each, so £89.40 the pair.
Rear pads (Pagid) £44.65 - this is a set of four pads that does both sides
Handbrake shoes £22.03 - this is a set of four shoes that does both sides
Rear wheel bearings (which are the same as a BMW 5 series E34 model) £75.20 - this is a pair and does both sides - worth considering having done if you're changing the discs and have the car dismantled anyway.

£231.28 for the whole lot.

My mechanics 'mates rates' got the job done for £100.

I replaced the front discs and pads in April 2009.

Front discs (ATE) £56.40 each, so £112.80 the pair
Front pads £35.13

£147.93 for the lot, and I did the job myself on the driveway.

The four anti-roll bar bushes were less than £10 the lot from Porsche main dealer and again did the job myself. All you need is a couple of spanners and some Fairy Liquid.

So under £400 for the parts (nearer £300 if you don't have the bearings done), and if you find a local friendly mechanic you'll probably get the lot done for under £200 labour costs - unless a keen local TIPEC member can help you out, but you'll struggle to do the bearings at home.

As for the bodywork - my drivers wing and the sills need doing, but my thoughts are that I'd rather have the car mechanically perfect and looking a little tatty rather than looking the business but being a bag of nails. The bodywork will be done over the summer.

So now you're not selling it go and find a local mechanic. Ask your friends who they use - he doesn't have to be a Porsche specialist. the above jobs are just routine to all mechanics.

Good luck with it.

Thanks for the advice all - I've decided that whether I sell or not, I'm going to sort these bits out (via a mates workshop)

as nice as they are I can't really justify the high cost of the current mechanics on this car - so will be hunting about for someone cheaper more local (my mate is about 2hours drive away!)
