Personnally I wouldnt trust any bit of 20 year old rubber no matter what anybody says, its just not worth finding out the hard way. Also these german space savers are not legal on our roads as they dont carry the required tread. I find the space saver a bit of dead weight in the rear of the car and I dont have a compressor either so I've taken it out. I pay a nice premium for road side breakdown assistance, as most of us do I imagine, and so would probably call them in the event of a flat, I also carry tyre weld for emergencies just in case. If the tyre is ruined I guess I'll have to live with replacing it...

I know several who have used the spacesaver after quite a few years & they've been fine. Mine is fine, no cracks etc. It also has tread on it & sold in the UK to an EU C & U it must be legal, if it ws legal in Germany when new. Space savers are like HID lights etc. They contravene the UK C & U regs but because they are legal in the EU country of manufacture they are legal here.

Embarrassing situation here. When mine was a daily driver it already had 16" D90s & I had all the S2 corners fitted so Brembo 4 pots on a Lux.
Going up the A1M one Sunday PM a BMW flashed me & indicated I had a puncture. I pulled over & swapped the wheel with the old style narrow (155x15 not low profile) spacesaver & put it all back together. Went to move off & it wouldn't. The 15" spacesaver wouldn't rotate as it fouled the Brembos   . Queue me being AA relayed from Peterboro to Bradford & then conning one of my colleagues to take me to a tyre dealer to get the punctured tyre replaced. Really frustrating as I had a spare set of D90s at home & even a 16" spacesaver which I changed over when I got home.

There's a dot life on tires. Shevel life that starts from the day it was made. This could be sold/look as a new never used tire. Be all black and shiny, still have the bobbles on. But would illage. If used. The dot life isn't easy 2 check. It's more code then sell by date.

My spacesaver is still in my 993 along with the compressor but probably won't use it as I pay an arm and a leg to the AA just for such an event. I also think that in the event of a front end collision the spacesaver would absorb some of the force, just a theory.

Reversing into something at speed would have the same effect on the 944

See a twunts on space savers whizzing past me on the motorway pretty much every day. I'd use mine at a push but id take it easy. I'd feel like an asshat calling out the AA with no spare in the car.

Spacesavers werent legal when the 944 was introduced, but EU law took precedence. This is why the UK owners manual initially told you to tall Porsche Assist if you had a puncture.

They are now.

I took two on a charity rally, both 1980s vintage. One performed perfectly when we had a blow out on the motorway in the middle of France on the way home. It was still on the car when it was MOTd 11 months later!

Here's my 25 year old (never used before) spare,i used it for 50km at speeds up to 120km/h.It looked perfect, like new,it didnt have any cracks when i inflated it, i saw them only afterwards...and yes i'm still alive.I'm replacing it with a 25 year old never used 951 alloy spare but i think i should change the tire and i suggest you do the same if you dont mind carrying it around for nothing or killing yourself.

Same spare as I have in my S2 but mine is red and it appears to be OK or did last time I inflated it.

Had occasion to use the space saver spare on my 928 when one of the rear wheels blew. The tyre was totally destroyed so despite having a 'spare in a can' I had to use the space saver. I was amazed how stable the car was with it. It was so easy to forget it was one. Yes they are a bugger to get back in the recess especially on a 928 but those little spares are gems.

One was off a 924S, similar to a series one part; and the other was an alloy collapsible. Both were good, but as the post above shows clearly - collapsible tyres do need checking.
