I have just brought a 1988 white 944S 2.5 16V car off ebay that starts with feathering of clutch and revs but when left to idle it cuts off straight away.

Any ideas for a quick fix as i brought the car on a gamble for £500 and would love to have it on the road for the March shows.

Pretty sure idle control on an S is ECU controlled. Try disconnecting the battery & reconnecting it may self learn again. Other option is sticky AFM, but with this they normally won't start. Also check the myriad pipes around the engine for an air leak, this could also cause a problem.

could be idle control valve, get clogged, but are situated under intake manifold so difficult to get at
