A difficult question. I have a 928 S4 digi dash with perfect bodywork (no stone chips/rust/dents) good interior with no seat bolster wear, all maintenance up to date. Aircon and everything else is working. Currently no faults except for the headlamp adjusters not working. Mileage 120,000.
I want to buy a cheaper 928 to do up, as this one needs no work now and I am a car restorer at heart. I've been offered a white S2 with good bodywork but many electrical and mechanical issues (drives OK though) for £800...just what I'm looking for.
Somebody has offered me £6,000 for my 928 but in the Classic Car magazines the condition 1 value is given as more than this, circa £8,000. Looking on ebay there are dozens of cheap 928's but the odd one goes to over £6,000. One went to £9100 the other week reserve not met! It wasn't a GTS either (although it's possible the seller could have been bidding on their own car to get the price up as so often happens on ebay)

Hi Lightining - thought your car looked great on the ebay ad with an excellent description. If youve had an offer for £6K I think in the current climate thats pretty good - the ones going for £8K plus at the moment seem to be sub 100K miles..not that this means they are better but I guess its the way some buyers look at it?

If your able to buy a reasonable S2 at £800 that runs and drives with a good body, that seems very cheap - then you could look at it that you have saved £1200 on a condition 3 example - so in the end the £6K for yours seems ok to me and of course you enjoy restoration.

I would say go for it - but of course A1 examples of 928 (like yours) could go up again in price over the next few years - its the gamble you take! If you manage to get the S2 to good order-knowing what you know from previous experience and suppliers and contacts that you now have etc there maybe a profit in it? Keep us posted.. Good Luck Rob

I really wouldn't pay much heed to the valuations quoted in car mags for 928s.

It's worth what someone will pay, so on that basis it's worth £6,000 (actually that sounds about right to me based on what they're fetching, or rather failing to fetch).

But that's only if you don't know what a wider market will offer. What interest did it attract when on eBay?

If you think it's worth £8000 then stick it on the usual suspects (pistonheads, 928.org.uk) at that price and see what level of interest is. That will answer your question. Anything else (my own comments included) is idle speculation really.

Well yes you are exactly right I think. The car is probably worth £8,000 but realistically it will sell for £6,000. I did get a lot of interest on ebay but I had to pull the auction early as the car developed a fault with the transmission(now repaired)

Hi Lightning, your car is certainly generating a lot of interest and high bids from excellent eBay ad. What do you think it will reach and will you definitely sell if it reaches £6000?

That was an amazing auction, my car sold for £7900 and that other 928 S4 went for £2600. Sure there were a few bits to do on the other one, and the sunroof had been blanked off, but I reckon that was a real bargain for somebody at £2600. What I think it does show is that people are scared off by 928's with faults or work needed.

You'd been very conscientious about maintenance, but I was just curious whether the new owner will need to do any suspension work. What was state of the engine mounts and were shocks original?

Was looking at the auction for other car (was on my watch list) and puzzled that winning bid was £2600, when he had set a BIN of £4750 and said the reserve was a little below that price? The £2600 is shown as winning bid so did the guy drop his reserve price altogether?

Yes he certainly dropped the reserve all of a sudden! If I'd got the money for mine I might have bought that one to restore.
My car is not sold until the seller pays! He says he's coming next Saturday, but he's not viewed the car and shows no knowledge of 928's. Mind you that's how I bought it last year.....
Suspension seems fine. Front shocks were replaced about 35,000 miles ago and the car rides well. Engine mounts seem fine, I'm sure the fluid has gone from them but the engine is smooth as silk and is not sitting on the crossmember. I asked for them to be replaced anyway last year when the sump gasket was done but the guy said they were OK.

Well, the ebay "buyer" is not responding to messages, to be honest I had a feeling this would happen. I can see he's still buying other small items so it's not as if he's away or anything.
The trouble with ebay these days is that buyers can "win" items and then just not pay, and you can't do anything about it, or leave negative feedback for them.

I'm surprised since the winning bidder has a very high score and 100% positive feedback.

You can request their contact details via eBay and give them a call. May be simple explanation.

Sellers can leave -ve feedback.

He's ignoring me, if he doesn't want the car there's nothing I can do really. There's a few S4's on ebay at the moment, cheaper than mine, and they are all advertised as superb condition. I went to see that red one at £6,000 and it's OK but needs at least £2,000 spending on it (tyres, brakes, aircon, paintwork, HVAC all require attention)

I don't mind keeping my 928 S4, it's a great car, it's just that everything is sorted on this one now and I fancy another one to restore. Also it's such a good one that I find myself never using it except for shows!

You could sell to the next highest bidder ... give them a second chance option.
I would certainly report this guy ... I can't stand non payers and you will get your fees back.
Worst thing Ebay did was stop sellers the ability to give negative feedback!

This is shocking! Why would you buy something and not pay for it . I don't get angry often, but this is one of the things I do not understand and it makes me wonder about some people. If bidding only gives you the option to look and decide later, I would have bought all the 928's in the last 6 months. I would not bid or "buy it now" any item I do not intend to purchase. Can you go to court? To not even reply to your e-mails is ( I can't think of a good word without swearing ) rude . I hope you can get a second chance offer to the next highest bidder. E-bay have got it weighted in the buyers favour now. My son could not even sell his escort without abuse and several non payers, and he only wanted a couple of hundred pounds.

Sorry about the rant! But I feel your pain. Hope you get what you deserve for the car( a fair price ).
