Hello,

Is it possible that belts that have been over tightened or wrongly tensioned in the first place could lead to a whining noise from the engine and then subsequently water not getting into the engine (possibly caused by subsequent water pump failure?)?

Sorry if thats naive but I am trying to diagnose the fault!

thansk,

Matt

If the belts are too tight then it will sound very whiney & it kills the bearing in the pump eventually. But in your case I would say it's lack of use. These cars hate to be laid up. Regular use & good maintenance is worth far more than low miles on a 944.

Hi

I then had a problem with no water getting into the block and now wonder whether the whine/chirping was a warning that the novice in me failed to notice (not helped by the grin as I roared around!). Now I fear that there has been some water pump/thermostat damage as it failed to get into the block, the car overheated and then leaked some from the area of the water pump.

I am very new to this but seems about right??

Matt

My guess is that the impeller came loose on the shaft & that was the noise you heard. You won't know for sure until you take the pump off. The main worry is the damage to the head as if it's warped it will need machining back square again or you will have recurrent issues with the head gasket & cam box gasket. You really need to get it in bits & check it out thoroughly.
