Hi All,

Just wanted to let you all know about a great article in this months 911 & PW magazine about Hartech who have produced a 3.0-litre 944 Turbo.

They used a 1990 944 Turbo 250bhp car with the later MO30 suspension and brake package. Hartech then used a 3 litre 968 block complete with crankshaft and pistons. The top crown was machined in a lathe to lower the compression to 8.5:1 ratio. They then added a standard 2.7 litre 8V 944 spec cylinder head to cope with cooling. They fitted larger fuel injectors, with the engine using 20-40% more air with increased fuel supply also.

They also fitted a 968-spec clutch plate to cope with additional torque, stiffened LSD plates to tune traction capabilities and an ECU remap done by Chip Wizards. Torque is 350ft/lb with power output at 300bhp. (I don't know whether the power output has been measured at the flywheel or the wheels though).

Hartech have plans to produce a 500bhp Turbo now :D . They're planning to use a 2.5-litre block as it has deeper coolant channels around the bores. The 2.5 litre block will be opened out to 3.0-litres. They're then planning to use a 16 valve cylinder incorporating Variocam. (Wasn't Porsche planning to do this years ago until they got a phone call from management asking them to cease further development as it would have made the 944 faster then the 911?)

What's so cool about this car though is it looks absolute bog standard other than sporting a set of cup alloys. A good sleeper that would blow most cars into the weeds. :iroc:

Ben :bounce:

Sounds good, but seems like a lot of work 4 extra 50bhp at the flywheel, so let's hope thts at the wheels.

As Bazza says in the article, it isn't about sheer peak power it is all about useable power & torque with less lag. It also looks very standard & is easy to maintain as it's predominately OEM Pork bits.

I think Paul Smith (3.2L turbo) on here has driven it - where are you Paul?

Thats power at flywheel. But with over 300lbs of torque that will feel imense. The peak power is lower down the rev range at just 5000rpm. I'd like that engine in my 944. :D

I got the impression the reason he wasnt selling it was that it was an experiment and had understandably been built up in his own words from " bits and pieces that were around" and therefore he wouldnt be happy selling it ?

Regards Mas

which month is this artcal? iv check aprils and cant find anything inside? got a grey car on the front cant remba which type.

jj looking at that graph i would say the peck is more 4500 and close 2 4000, plus the toqrue! makes the extra 50php seem a lot more worth it. plus its more like extra 80bhp over the 968 engine as its non turbo charged.

iv got some offical power graphs for 2.5 85.5 n/a 2.5 S and 220 turbo

Sorry, was having a doze 8)

Yes I drove it at Oulton Park back in December and was hugely impressed with it. He put it together purely as an experiment which he started last century and then sidelined it as his business got so busy reconditioning Boxster and 996 engines.

The headline power figures may not impress some people but it's the amount of torque that really transforms this car and the way that it delivers it very low down in the rev range, 350lbft at only 4000rpm. The standard 2.5 engine only makes 250lbft at that level whereas this car has passed that amount by just over 3000rpm. What it achieves is an almost totally lag free car that drives just like an S2 but with much more power EVERYWHERE in the rev range.

When modifying a 944 Turbo most people add wastegates, turbos, exhausts, MAF kits and all sorts of bolt on goodies then run at quite high boost levels (up to 20psi instead of the standard 12psi). Barry has simply removed the 2.5L engine and dropped in a 3.0L version and ran it at the same boost level. If he then added all the other bolt on goodies it would probably be up there around the 400bhp and 500lbft level (like mine  )

Possibly though I seem to remember him writing there were 2 cars he was going to sell, this one and a part finished 3.0, maybe he's keeping them for his 16v turbo project.

When I spoke to him at Oulton he definately said he would sell it as he's done all he intended to with that one. It's actually a very nice car in tip top mechanical conition. Unusual but nice colour, refurbed M030 suspension set very low, new brakes, new 3.0L engine, new clutch, can't remember the interior but if it was tatty it would stick in my mind.

I got the feeling that just under £10k would secure a pretty unique car that is damned fast and very smooth to drive
