Popped out this afternoon to Halfords in the '44 and went for a bit of a run as it was such a nice afternoon.

Not a lot of traffic about so I was "progressing nicely" and enjoying the drive when I came up behind an MX-5. The guy driving saw me in his rear view and with a tell tale puff of smoke from the exhaust, geared down and floored it

Being interested in the comparison between the two cars ( and cos I love to rag it) I put my foot down a little and the old girl easily kept up - to the point where I was really holding her back and could have overtaken easily if the road had permitted without being bloody dangerous.

I must admit I thought the MX -5 would have had more??

Always been the problem and the forte of the MX5, 1.6 or 1.8 engines that only have just enough power but thats what makes the chassis seem so sweet because theres not enough power to overwhelm it, RWD and nimble but not in the same league as a 944.

MX 5 is totaly flat. No go at all. You should be able to leave one for dead. Even the 1.8 is gutless. In my book highly over-rated. Popular as they don't have enough power to get you into trouble. :)

Forgot the new one. Have no experience of it except that Clarkson said it's the same as the old one!

Your right the new one has a 158bhp 2.0 but is nearly 150kg heavier than the original, but at just under 1100 its still lighter than a 944 or my even lardier 968 at over 1400kg

True but they have little torque. Quite a narrow power band. So in the real world they can't cut it. (just looked them up. 135lbs)
