I didn't bother putting a post in here before, but I may as well. With the daily driver throwing a paddy yet again I really do need another daily that won't test my patience (at the moment that is literally the case!). Swaps for a Family car less than 5 years old will be considered.

Make & Model : Porsche 944 S2 3.0
Year: 1989
Mileage : 136,000
Tax: September 2010
MOT: April 2010
Price: £3500

I bought this car last June with a poorly engine. The No.2 Piston had previously seized in the bore, hence it made a racket as some of you may recall. I aquired another engine from a Porsche breaker with 85,000 miles on it, and sent the engine down to EMC Motorsport in Birmingham (www.emcmotorsport.com). Whilst it was there, the following was performed on it:

Cambelt, Balance belt and tensioners all renewed
Cam timing setup/dialled in
New Sachs Solid Centred Clutch Kit
Backplates/Crackle Effect cam cover transferred from the old engine with new gaskets
Cambelt tension checked after 1500 miles.

I have done around 3,000 miles in it since then and it has been a pleasure to drive the car. It pulls well, and cleanly to the redline with a kick at 4k, and generally is free of untoward noises. I have also changed the V5 details to make everything up to date.

Furthermore it's had the following done in my ownership mechanically:

New O/S Lower Arm (Hartech Replacement)
968 Lower Arm/Castor mounts
BERU Ignition leads/Cap and rotor arm
New Handbrake springs
Radiator cap
New Radiator Hoses and heater hoses
New Fanswitch
Heater Matrix (Porsch-APart)
New Radiator (ECP, but a genuine OE LRO branded rad)
2 x New tyres (front)

Previous to my ownership the owner (he did 20,000 miles in the car (7k of which were done over the last 3 years) over 10 years) he did the following:

Braided Brake lines
New Pads/Discs/Shoes all round
New Oil pressure sender (on the new engine)
New N/S Lower Arm (PorschApart)
Exchange Steering Shaft (PorscheShop)
New TREs and Track Rods (ECP)

As a result, mechanically it's very tight.

Interior wise it's all good too. It has leather seats front to back which are devoid of cracks and rips. Rest of the interior is also good. I will also throw in the Becker Mexico Pro into the sale which perfectly compliments the interior in a retro/modern kind of way, or I gave give the Pioneer tape and 6 CD Changer combination which came with the car.

Exterior wise it's got a few stonechips on the front but generally it's quite tidy and devoid of dents. It's sitting on Genuine 996 Carrera 2 Alloy wheels with 944/968 specific tyre sizes, in addition to 968 Mirrors.

So whats wrong with it? Shame to give up at this stage. Though the ever increasing price of petrol will probably turn all these cars into toys before long.

Nothing at all. If anything I'm really enjoying it and it feels like being back with an old friend that you almost forgot about. It's my daily which has given me yet another hurdle:

I really need another backup car with the miles that car is doing (about 700+ a week). Mondeos seem to be holding their value better than I imagined :(. That Mondeo in the thread has been great for about 40,000 miles since we bought it last year, but I do need another fall back option as 60k a year is testing a car somewhat.

Sell the mondeo & use the pork as daily drive. If you want economy buy somthing that was designed for it. They get am LPG car every week at the garage. Yet to see one thats well engineered. They all blow up. Some withing 3K miles of being converted. You can get a good Passat derv for 3K now. Keep the Porsche. You just got it sorted. :wink:

I'd agree. but I'd say most are done by monkeys. Our last 2.0 Mondeo did 400k, 300 of which was on LPG ;).

Keeping the Porsche would have been the default choice. For my last workplace it served me very well, even with the knocking engine I clocked up a good 4k with nothing to grind it to a halt (not bad for a car that was a garage queen for 4 years). Oh, and the colleagues surprisingly saw it as an awesome car and a leftfield choice of car. OK it needed the odd job here and there but no car is bulletproof and there is no depreciation for a change :). New job needs a car that's no older than 5 years old from when it's first used :(.

Fingers crossed something will work out. Took it for a 100 mile drive today. I forgot what it was to drive a great piece of machinery.

Damn, where were you when I was in the market 18 months ago.

I would have more than happily parted with that kind of money for a decent S2 :(

Hard to buy a car thats under 5 years old without spending loads. And non of the new ones are built to last. It's all toy town stuff. All the more reason to keep the '44! You know it makes sense. Best of luck whatever you do. :)

My tuppence worth get yourself a Turbo Diesel Volvo ( or 2nd choice a Passat/Golf) but either way, in a manual. Good MPG and if its the Volvo buyers don't need to go for 5 years old as a ten year old one ( I know you have to) will be different class to a 5 year old lesser car. At 150,000 miles you will think you are driving a car with 50,000 on the clock and it will probably be far more reliable too !
