As some off you may remba, my electric fan keeps staying on, even if the engines not running. The fan will stay on while the relay is pluged in. So iv got in the habit of just leaving the car a min 2 cool then unpluging the relay. But iv noticed a smell bit like oil or burning electrics, from under the hood. Seems stronger on the front left side off the block near the power streeing resovior. So day I drove ten miles with it unpluged ready 2 pull over the moment I saw the temp niddle go futher then the 1st White mark ( running temp ). It didn't. But when I pulled up. I could smell a sick smell, I opened the hood and plug the relay in expecting the fan 2 start, it didn't. There's a lot of warmth come form the engine, so I turn the car of and un pluged, re pluged the relay. No fan, started the car still no fan.

Is it like 2 have fixed the promblem or is tht sick smell a burnt off temp sensor?
I need 2 drive home and don't want 2 cause any damage.

Terry,

Does the temp' display on the dash now sit at the bottom when cold. If the temp' is cold and does not rise then the sensor is faulty. If it is cold and rises when the car runs then it is reading ok.

The sensor is on the front right of the engine just below the inlet manifold. If the diisplay on the dash is up at the white mark try and disconnect it, without burning your hand, and see if it drops down to cold. If so the sensor is ok.

However, if your waterpump has failed or the thermostat is faulty then the water will no go round the engine and the sensor will say it is running cool when it is actually hot.

The fan should kick in when the radiator is hot. Do you have a thermometer to test the radiator and see if hot water is getting to it?

Thanks, my knowage of cars engines us quite weak at the mo. I can tell you tht the water pump is new and there's no sing of over heating. I think it just the temp sensor on the rad thts aT fluat. It wouldnt behavour as it was, stay on as soon as the relay is on hot or cold engine runing or off. I drove the car about a bit making a few stops and leave the car 4 10-15 mins. The fans relay was pluged in, but the fan wasn't coming on. Then after the 3rd stop it stayed on, left it about 20-30 mins and had 2 manualy turn it off by pulling out the relay. So I'm guessing it back 2 just staying on again. But at least it's working still.

Thanks 4 ur reply

I would get that looked at sooner rather than later. All the good work on your spoilers could be ruined if you need a new engine because it cooks itself. The cost of replacing the 2 sensors and the relay is a fraction of the cost of an engine. Better safe than sorry.
