Hey everyone! New on here and going to need lots of help and advice? Im in the motortrade and am a true petrol head but am fastidious about cars being right and just weighing up wether my old 944 is worth spending the money on? Its a dream to drive but have just taken to my friends w/shop as have a rumbly back end and after having the wheel bearing done its still there! Jacked it up and ran it in 2nd and the noise is distinctly diff area......hmmm....was going to have a full service inc belts and rollers new tyres tracking etc etc and not sure if its worth it with a dodgy diff? he did suggest change of fluid and an additive may reduce the noise? i did kinda think it may be diff as it feels a bit crumbly on full lock from back end.....??? anyone have thoughts or ideas?....

Is it more of a low hum sound? If so it will be the gearbox/transaxle (which lives in the back). A bit of humming is normal. Unless it's really singing its head off I would not worry too much. The tolerances of the gearbox weren't fantastic even when new but they are proven to be long lived units.

You can try changing your gearbox oil if you want, but try removing the filler plug first .

Yes its beyond bearable,I spoke to james at 944 parts and said may be worth trying outer diff bearings and replace torque tube at the same time? he has a 944 turbo box and diff for 400 pounds but gearing will be different?

It's output bearings. If you take the covers off the diff have a look you will probably see that the chrome has come off the bearings. You can just replace them with the oil seals & change the oil. But it depends how long it's been like that as iron filings will wreak havoc on the rest of the bearings. Not big money to have a go though. Better to put the turbo box in with new output bearings in while your at it. I'd leave the torque tube alone for now. One thing at a time. Just got a recond' box for mine as it has the same problem. Incidentally it's a lot better to replace the output bearings before there totally goosed. Then the box will have a new lease of life & probably last another 100K miles. Had I known I would have replaced them years ago.

Thanks i think i will try new bearings and some descent oil? whats best for them?
Im also thinking of doing belts and rollers etc is gsf best for the full kits and am i best to do waterpump at same time?
Also i need a set of headlamp adjusters the metal adjusters and all the plastic clips? Is opc only place ill get them?
