Okay, I'll try that.

Sorry to sound a bit dim, but what does FPR stand for?

Okay, I found some time to remove the cam belt cover and the belts look fine and don't feel slack.

I took No.1 spark plug out and checked the TDC marks on the cam wheel lined up when the piston was at TDC...all seems fine there.

So I'm now on the look out for a new or good used Fuel Pressure Regulator. (And hope that that's what's wrong with it).

Do you think I should buy a new one or do you think a used one will suffice?

Where do you think I could get one from cheap?

Before you get a new FPR, try doing the test on Clark's Garage guide and measuring the fuel rate.

One of the tests is to remove a lead of the injectors incase the injectors are taking too much current. If it starts it will almost certainly point to a bad regulator.

Here is one way of how to diagnose the FPR. There is further information within the Porsche Workshop manuals.
http://www.clarks-garage.com/pdf-manual/fuel-07.pdf

Buying one, try OPC first. I'd then look to PCT in Coventry for one, finally moving onto the likes of ECP who may work out to be the cheapest but you never know with OPC prices.

I've done the removal of the injector test. It makes no difference. I don't have a fuel pressure tester and looking at the prices of a good one, I might as well get another fuel pressure regulator and test it that way.

Are they all different for each 944 model? I've looked on ebay and the ones from the United States state that they fit all models. UK ones state that they only fit listed models.

I've got to ring Exeter OPC for some parts today, want me to get a price for an FPR for you while I'm at it?

ETA: Price they have is £92.44

Time to start from scratch and work through things methodically.

On a whim, is the AFM sensor connection ok? If this is dirty/has come off, this would also cause the car not to start at all. In my 205 (with the same AFM as a 944 or at least based on it), when that came undone, the car did strange things and eventually fell off leaving my friend stranded at the side of the road.

I've already thought of that one, connection to the AFM looks fine and clean. I really think that the problem is with the fuel pressure regulator/bore wash as (to me) this seems the only logic reason behind it running fine then there being no compression in any of the cylinders and the engine being flooded with petrol. I've got a FPR ordered from Porscha-part...so just waiting for it to arrive.

So fingers crossed, it's that. :?

Well Lindsay, the Borth guess would be easy as part of the file name for the picture is Borth I'm not sure where you got the 8th to 15th of August from? I think it was August..not sure of the exact date.

So come on, pray tell.

Fingers crossed indeed, and best of luck :).

It may be worth turning the engine over with no plugs in it, and putting them back in and starting it as if it were flooded. I guess with zero compression, the engine is 'pulsing' less when starting and sounding a little smoother on the cranking.

I'd also be inclined to agree with bore wash.

Good idea, I've also heard that putting a little engine oil down the spark plug holes will help the compression on first start. But I'm not so sure about that?

I'm goona have to do a full oil change if it is bore wash, as the oil will be mixed with petrol.

Peeing it down with rain this morning where I am.....let's hope it's not on for the weekend.
