Right. Caliper is off. Not too bad - those bolts are really tight!

Order a new caliper tomorrow and it's still feasible to get it re-MoT'd by friday, in the free retest period...

Just noticed the tax runs out the end of march. Can't believe I've had this car 6 months! Hardly driven the thing.
There's a car outside my flat that was clamped this morning for no tax. Not my car, but it is taking up a parking space!!

PS: Lee944 - made some brake lines as well, using the Screwfix tool. No problems, but you need to be sure to make sure the die is square on the pipe before you make the flare. I think there are better tools available (See review in Car Mechanic magazine, March issue) but it's done the job. I used Kunifer pipe which bent quite easily and didn't need a bending tool. Good luck!

Check the thread of the new hose you bought, if you have stripped the threads of the old caliper then the flexi hose threads will not be in very good shape. Last thing you want is to strip the threads of your brand new caliper.

P.S.
I've bought the flaring tool ready for this summer, thanks for the tip. So where did you buy the pipe and did you buy new connectors or re-use the old ones?

( I had to edit this after reading it back, it was not in English. Watching football and typing in not something I can do!! )

Lee.

Which thread have you managed to strip? The only threads in the actual caliper are for the flexi hose and the bleed nipple.

I'm currently refurbishing a set I just bought off a guy on here so may have one going spare soon, depends how urgently you need it and what condition the inside of the old one is like (one of the fronts was particularly bad but can't remember which one it was).

I stripped it where the flexi hose goes in. I'm still cross with myself for doing it.

Thanks for your offer - I've ordered an exchange one now. I decided to get an exchange one as a used one may need servicing anyway. I just want to put it in an be done with it!

How's this for service? GSF list it but when I phoned up they had none in stock and none of their branches had one. I'll call back says the guy. Half an hour later he calls back to say they'll have it by the morning. I'm trying to figure out how to get out to Marsh Barton tomorrow morning when he says, "Do you want to pick it up or shall we drop it out to you?" What? what! Oh yes please!!! So they'll deliver it to work for free! How amazing is that?

Eurocaparts list one at £305 (+VAT), I found one place selling an exchange unit for £80+VAT & shipping - GSF is £73 exchange +VAT delivered. Awesome.

I'm trying to get it done by Friday so I don't have to pay for another MoT....There's nothing more motivating than a deadline rushing towards you.

And Lee944: I checked the thread of the hose in one of the old unions and it's tight enough to need a spanner when they usually go in by hand. So I think I'll get another hose to be sure. Thanks for the tip. :salute:
About the brakelines - I bought some Kunifer pipe (copper/nickel) from ebay for £12 for 25' but it didn't turn up in time for the weekend so i bought 3m from Pirtek (they call it Bundy pipe, I think) on saturday morning for a tenner. I bought some male connectors from ebay for about £3 for 10 so it didn't seem worth using the old ones. Take some time getting the die square on the pipe and you'll need a file to chamfer the end of the pipe. Surprisingly satisfying to do!

Sounds good. I must be a sucker for punishment. Just ordered a set of seals for all 4 calipers and going to give them a good tidy up in a new few weeks.

I phoned HEL to see if they will sell me one hose to replace the one with the damaged thread and they said no problem, but bring it in and they'll see if there's enough hose to just replace the fitting which will only cost "three or four quid". Right, any chance you can do it while I wait? "Yeah, no problem!".

What's going on with these helpful people? They're raising my expectations of other companies....

Recommend HEL braided hoses - Full set is £60 inc VAT and free delivery. Ordering them online is really easy, there's a choice of 14 colours at no extra charge and the ends are stainless steel. They make them up when you order them and send them out that day. http://helcarkits.co.uk

Thanks to everyone who offered help and advice - my car has now passed it's MoT!

It failed on emmissions last time at 5.3% (first test was 7.3%!), this time they were down to 0.74%. A significant improvement! Not sure what cured it - a combination of cleaning the AFM (thanks Jim!), a dose of Redex and an Italian tune up on the way to the MoT station....

Now I can take it out and enjoy these never ending sunny days we're having at the moment.

Thanks to everyone again - I wouldn't have bought one of these amazing cars if wasn't for this forum.

Glad it has passed the MOT The CO reading is a fraction low. From memory the book figure is 1.8% which will give better performance.
