That white S4 on ebay is up to £8100. I think that's a lot for one of these? People seem to be paying high prices for old cars generally at the moment. I bought "Classic and Sportscar" this week and just ended up shaking my head at the prices in there. Fifty grand for a Mk 2 Ford Escort. Rally history granted, but still a MK2 Ford Escort. Six thousand for a low mileage Austin Allegro. Twelve thousand for a late Capri 1.6L and nearly forty K for a Triumph TR5....nice car, but forty K? Who is buying these cars?

I do like the interior!

It is a high price (for eBay anyway), but I paid £8K for my 1991 S4 almost a year ago so not outlandishly high. Mine had lower mileage and could have fitted the description in the ebay ad in terms of bodywork/interior (the ebay ad is alarmingly light on mechanical description).

With any car this age there is bound to be thouands of pounds worth of catch-up/replacement work due, simply because of age and not because owner has skimped on the official service routine (looks like they haven't). I'm thinking of things like suspension (it looks a bit low at the back), engine mounts, rubber hoses, fuel lines, brake lines and hoses, vacuum pipes... At that age radiators and racks start to let go.

Even if all that stuff had to be done £8K is still remarkably low compared with even its Porsche peers. It's considerably less than a 911 of same year (a 964 presumably) and same described condition, and in my opinion the 964 is nowhere near the car a sorted 928 is, yet we accept that prices for these cars are around twice as high year for year. The cost of the kind of remedial work I've described is "baked into" old car prices, so I don't think anyone should be disappointed to pay say £8K and then have to pay several thousand more to bring it up to snuff. Once you've spent those parts are good for another 20 years.

Anyway Lightning long way of saying I agree with you that prices in general seem to be on the up, and I suppose their is some carry over from a buoyant used market for 'normal' cars as well as a growing reported interest in classics.

Money in the bank doesn't make much interest at the moment, so maybe people are buying cars and enjoying their cash instead?

I am still amazed at how undervalued the 928 is, especially with more and more each week that goes by being broken up for spares. Every week there are a couple more on ebay. At that rate there wont be any left soon!

I know, I've bid on a couple of the cheap ones recently, bottom line for a useable one now seems to be about £2,000.

On the 928uk site Angus Fox wisely points out that the limiting factors on 928 prices include other fine GT cars which are also fetching low prices, such as Jag XK8 (hmm maybe strike "fine" from the record), BMW 8 series etc. There is also downward price pressure from the 996 which is not dissimilar in concept to 928 (more comfortable GT than out and out sports car, at least in base engine spec).

Much as I love 928s (I admit I'm more interested in 928s than I am in Porsches in general), you can't deny that there is a potent mythology surrounding air-cooled 911s that does not attach to the 928. Mythology counts an awful lot when it comes to pricing classic cars (see E-Type Jaguar, Aston Martin DB5), especially when those cars are essentially an indulgence.

I agree about the 911 Mythology ... they do have a certain X Factor that is difficult to describe. But I think the 928 has bags of charachter and a certain amount of X Factor itself in a way. Again .... can't really put my fingure on.

I'll be honest .. my dream car (realistic) is a Tahoe Blue late Carrera 2 Cab (964) would have that over any Porsche since.

Gentlemen whilst I have to agree with most of the points made in this post - let’s not forget the 928 is an outstanding car, in both in design and performance (yes like you Adrian I'm very biased) - the car in question also has an unusually good looking interior (was this original do you think?) – but as far as the eventual selling price is concerned – well we shall see – but I somehow feel that the car will NOT make its reserve price – considering what the seller is asking for it on PistonHeads – just my twopenneth – but also good to see that there are still low mileage 928’s available - even if I can’t justify spending the money on them at the time.............

I believe it is all a matter of personal cicumstance and taste. Americans buy a Van Gogh for the price of a hospital wing, because they want to and can. I wouldn't have one in my house, but I can't afford $100m. If you have the money and like the car then you are lucky.

If you look at the ferrari 456, slightly simmilar car, then there is such a price variation depending on colour, interior and service history. Personally I would have the 928, it's all about taste.

Is the rear center console normal to have the black thing on it?
Looks like could be rear air con like on the US cars?
I only know the S2, so might be normal on all S4's - so could be stupid question!

How did owner replace coil packs when 928 was built years before coil-on-plug ignition became popular?

Slightly off subject ... I was reading a 1999 Porsche and 911 World last night and it had a 928 Club Sport for sale in the back. For £12,950. Would have been a good buy, especially 10 years ago?

Re S4 GT - I guess he means Grand Tourer car rather than model designation, but who knows! Knowing the DVLA, it might say S4 GT on the V5?

My brother has been to see that 928 at the dealer's in Surrey, advertised on ebay for £5995. He said it's OK but needs a respray as there are numerous imperfections, but he said it looks alright from across the road!
