Can anybody help? I need to replace the larger front door speakers and it seems that they changed in 1988. My 928 S4 was registered in March 1989 but the order sheet says "Model year 1988". It has the digital dash though.

There's plenty of sellers offering speakers on ebay but nobody can tell me which of the 2 types I need. How do you remove the grille? I guess the part number may be on the back of the speaker?

You have presented us with a paradox here Lightning!

My last S4 was MY 88 but analogue dash. Digi-dash appeared MY89 onwards so there is some error on the spec/build info you have.

On my MY88 the covers just unscrewed from the large door speakers. They were 4", but 2 ohm I seem to remember which is a very odd impedance. The original speakers were dreadful paper cone items by Blaupunkt so don't even think about replacing with originals, even if you can find any (presumably only from breakers?).

Do you still have the external amp? If so speakers with higher impedance will be quiet but the amp itself is way obsolete.

If you're concerned about cracking covers trying to remove them (they can become brittle), then remove door panel and speaker will be revealed in all it's lo-fi glory. You may find they are no longer the originals anyway.

In any case door panel has to be removed to replace speaker, whatever you have in there.

I had the door panel off at the weekend and you can only see the backs of the screws holding the speaker on. When you say "the covers just unscrewed" do you mean you rotated the covers to unscrew them? The cover on mine has no visible screws.

I have the two part numbers from Porsche dealer.

So I'll remove the speaker and see if it's got a part number on it.

Sorry to mislead on access to speaker via panel removal - I didn't remove panel on my 88 S4 and the speakers have been replaced (MB Quarts) on current one.

The part numbers for speakers are correct. The one you want is the 89 onwards 928.645.212.00 but I would be very surprised if they were still available - the design is so obsolete compared with a modern speaker.

On my MY88 the covers did unscrew by rotating them - the mounting rings are threaded. For 89 on the speakers were changed (10 speaker system, not 8) and the covers are snap on. You just need to carefully twist/pull them so that a little gap opens up allowing you to gently pry them off. With covers off you just take out the 4 screws and disconnect the speaker terminals to remove.

It's a little tricky to find speakers which will fit at the front, and you have to cut the old speakers off the mount rings if you want a completeky stock loo, but thy do exist and would be a huge improvement on the originals.

This is the speaker, the later type. Can anybody sell me one of these? Plus the cover which, of course, broke when I tried to remove it!

I have a new large speaker brand New in the BOX.
I will go out to my Garage tomorrow and check the part number for you.

It fits my 89 928 S4 1989 Auto so guess this is the one you would need so the part number would be the one you needed.

That would be great, if it's the right one.....sounds like it will be if it's for a 1989. Everybody says to upgrade the speakers as they are no good, but it works, and that will do for now! Plus I have ten speakers, not that you'd know it to listen to the sound quality, but it would be a job to replace them all.
If the speaker is the right one I will of course buy it from you, send me a message with cost including postage, plus your address, and I will send you a cheque.

The part number on the speaker is : 928.645.428.00
I bought it a year ago as my speaker wasn't working - then found it was the wiring.
Was always going to keep it as a spare as new ones are difficult to find it seems. But if it helps you out no problem.
If memory serves me correct it wasn't cheap - will have to check my CC bills.

That's the earlier speaker. Can you look on the back of the speaker and tell me what the impedance is? it should say something like 2 or 4 and then the ohms symbol. I may be OK to fit it, with a new cover, but need to know if it will match the other one.
