To refurb or not to refurb - Boxster split rims

Post by JasonC »

Evening all.

Spent a couple of hours this afternoon washing and scrubbing the ol' girl (Boxster 2000 - not the Mrs) and my 17" split rims seem to have suffered a some pretty heavy brake dust corrosion over the winter. It's only on the bare metal outer part of the wheel

I've used some "Wonder Wheels U" wheel cleaner and it hasn't done the job very well at all. The youth at Halfords suggested that sanding down and a refurb would probably be best but that seems a bit extreme. I'd probably take it somewhere anyway or have the rims replaced. (this looks reasonable from the Porscheshop.co.uk)

So...

1) Can anyone recommend a good wheel cleaner for split rims? R222 and Sonax have been popped up on a couple of sites
2) I'm in the East Mids so who does a reliable job on wheel refurbs in this area?

Look at these that I found on ebay - same as mine - give or take an inch :?

Thanks muchly

Lol! I was kind of hoping that they may answer my post! :wink:

Maybe it's the lack of a membership number :oops:

Hi :)

If yours are the same as that link.....which are my type of wheels...

Have yours refurbed like mine....£480 including the colour of choice... thats a LOT cheaper than buying those in the link....

I had my split rims refurbed by bjvengineering
http://www.wheelrefurbishing.co.uk/
black centre silver rim
was £280 inc VAT
very good job too

btw, it's probably the 'wonder wheels' that's helped knacker them;
don't go near these wheels with acid;
the diamond cut rim is just lacquered normally, which offers very little protection from stone chips etc.
once there is a break in the lacquer, corrosion sets in very quickly, and 'wonder wheels' will only speed this up & make it worse !

simple dilute bilberry juice cleaner is all you need

and plenty of water

Thanks Guys

Those wheels are the same as mine (minus the blue centres)

The Wonder Wheels "U" is supposed to be fine according to the packaging.

I have a whole new problem now - I crashed my Boxster and killed it :roll: Gutted
I'm now travelling up and down the country looking for another. Think I've found one - nearly bought 2000 911 C4 Cab though yesterday!
