I'm still a bit concerned about the running temperature of my 928 S4. The gauge sits at just below the higher of the 2 marks all the time.
The radiator has been checked for leaves etc between it and the condenser (in fact it's had a new condenser). I fitted a new thermostat and gasket. The cooling fans seem to work although I'm not sure about the louvres in the grille. What's the best way to check the fans/louvres....leave the engine running and wait to see if they operate?

There's no sign of water in the oil or oil in the water, and the cooling system is not over pressurising. The head gaskets were replaced about 25,000 miles ago. There's no white smoke from the exhaust or any other evidence of problems.

To check louvres have someone turn ignition to on while you watch them - they will go through an open/shut test sequence (this doesn't test whether they are triggered correctly when coolant hot but tests most of functionality).

The temp gauge position sounds fine to me.

When you replaced the t-stat did you replace the rear seal?

The seal inside the thermostat housing you mean? Yes, after advice on this forum I ordered both, and it was a good job I did as the old seal was just a rusty metal ring.

Oh and my volt meter only works if you hit the top of the console with your hand! How easy is it to get the instrument cluster out to repair it? Easier than the centre console I hope.

Engine running temperature, this is OK? Never gets any higher.

The pod is not too hard to take out, but it's a bit fragile so care needed. The clips that hold the connectors on are easily broken, so take care particularly with those.

Forgot to say .... I said last time if I took it out again I would put a mirror outside facing in so I can see behind the pod during removal.

I am not expert enough to comment. Personally I wouldn't worry too much. Does it start low and grow to that?

Gradually warms up to that and then stays there all the time.

That gauge seems fine to me..its meant to run at between 85 and 88 degrees.... so close enough....mine runs high but stable and never overheats....
