Spent satisfying time today completing two door projects - installing new door stay and new door seal (both right hand side).

I still need to do the stay on the other side but it's a fantastic improvement. Door needs a very firm shove to move it, and it shifts very positively into three well-defined positions.

The new seal has added benefit that door shuts with a lovely thunk, and when you open it from inside it pops open slightly because the new seal is so springy and seats itself fully over time.

The door stays especially are a cheap and simple way to restore that part of the car to factory condition, and fairly cheap too (stays about £25 per side, and the new rubber gaskets which create a shock mount for them are about £1.50 each.

Actual working time on the door stay around 2-3 hours but that was being very leisurely. Trickiest bit is getting at the two allen bolts which hold stay in edge of door. It's one of those 928 things where you wonder at first how you'll manage it, then afterwards wonder what fuss was about.

The door seal takes literally minutes to fit. Typically for me I still managed to spread job over couple of days, but most of that was faffing about wondering why seal didn't fit as well as original (answer it takes time for it to work way in to channel while door is closed), waiting for advice on whether adhesive needed (it isn't), and then getting some glue to join cut ends of new seal (I could have installed in one piece as had the panel off and stay disconnected for the door stay job, but making a cut means not having to remove the very tight/potentially snappable cable ties holding wiring to door.

I had to faff around with re-attaching membrane to door too after finding the adhesive I tried didn't work!

The panel comes away and is re-installed very easily in that lovely over-engineered 928 fashion with loads of screws and trim clips.

I will add it to my list of thing to do then. Sounds like fun and good satisfaction. I need to fix the windows and sort the mirrors so panels need to come off anyway.

I'll be taking the door panels off when I do the window scraper seals, did you use a guide/book

I used a write-up on Landsharkoz (google for this excellent site). But it is intuitive apart from one screw hidden under the tube carrying wiring to door, and two screws lost in pile at base of carpet panel.

I buy most of my 928 parts from the States, though am happy to use my excellent OPCs for stuff I need in a great hurry. The door stays were part of one such very large order which I placed ages ago.

The exchange rate has moved dramatically against the £ over past year or so. You are correct that at current exchange rate the stays would be cheaper here (currently £23 from US). 18 months ago they were same equivalent price in the US but I can't expect US suppliers to keep adjusting their prices to suit little old me in England when most of their customers are local!

By the same token I didn't notice my OPC was in any hurry to reduce prices when the Euro collapsed by 10% against the £...

However I'm still finding that some official Porsche 928 parts are up to 75% cheaper sourced via the US so overall I'm better off getting most of my stuff there. In addition the service and parts knowledge is incomparably better than any UK supplier outside of OPCs.

Well spotted on the local price though - makes job even more of a no-brainer for 928 folks!

Hi :)

Again I agree with Adrian on buying from the US....

I always estimate that all in they are around 50% cheaper than buying in the UK and that INCLUDES the carriage etc.... and these are genuine Porsche parts which shows what a rip off OPC`s are....

Myself and my brother (also has a 928) have a "list" of parts we add to and when big enough we order , usually from Roger at 928RUS.....

I only ever buy small or urgent parts from the OPC....or UK generally....

Yes Roger is brilliant, I'm also a big fan of 928 International best site for locating/describing parts) and Dave & Jeannie at 928 Specialists. Each has their particular strengths, all provide fantastic service.

Obviously there are far more 928s in the States (and I get the impression they are generally maintained to a very high standard), but it's still fantastic that they can support 3 excellent 928 specialists, and that's without the more esoteric stuff available from Carl at 928 Motorsports.
