I may have a problem :?
How loud is my car?
Does a 964 with no cat and only the last box in the exhaust produce less than 98db?
Does anyone know how i can test it?
If i book it and my car is to loud will i get a refund?
Iam uncertain and need help.

Hi :)

The way sound at a track is tested is this...

They use a decibel meter at 18 inches from exhaust tip and level with ground and at 45 degrees...

This is done at 2/3 revs ...so if your red line starts at say 6000 they will ask you to hold revs at 4000...most tracks have 2 people to do this, one looks in your window to watch tacho and one reads meter at rear.

If you were near me I could measure it with my db meter.

They sell on Ebay for around £30..

As a guess, I think you will fail 98db if you have removed ANY silencing boxes...

Tracks will NEVER normally refund on noise failure, although you can usually hire some "noise cans" which clamp on your exhaust tips to quieten noise, although they wouldn't work on mine as much too loud lol...

I don't " think" Bruntingthorpe hires cans but I am sure SEAN could find out for you...

Hope this helps...

All the best Brett :)

There would definately be no refund on the day if you fail the noise test. I am told that all standard Porsche cars will be fine - only folk with modified exhausts/engines might have an issue. If in doubt I would get a test done beforehand - just to be safe.

I've done a trackday at Bruntingthorpe before and they didn't use the full 2 mile straight for the Indy circuit. They use nearly a mile of it with a small cut through in proper tarmac to link the two sides of the runway surface (it's the green line in this pic)

Image

The other half of the long straight was used by other companies when I was there. HGV's doing training manouveres one day and Don Palmer doing extreme handling on another. 964's with any sort of exhaust mod always struggle at 98db days :(

Interested but how loud is a Dansk full system???? Don't have a meter. Sounds pretty loud to me though. Lot of money to lose.

Hi :)

It might be at 4000 revs standing still..........

Needs testing before paying....ANY race track has Db meter (any near OP ?)...

OR...a lot of music shops that sell fancy high end speakers have them for setting up the speakers.....find a shop and ask to borrow for 2 minutes :)

All the best Brett :)

Dont think all be goin
My car is about 102-105db, which does sound very good but prevents me from attending.
98db isnt a lot if you ask me, oulton park will let me run they have a 105db limit.

How strict are they? Do they test everycar?

Hi :)

Bruntingthorpe WILL test every car STATIC (that means stood still in the Scrutineering area)

Other major tracks also have STATIC AND DRIVE BY meters that are automatic at certain places round the tracks....you can ease off the throttle as you come up to them if you know where they are but if they still catch you out ,you will get black flagged :(

I HATE noise levels and thats why I know so much about them :(

All the best Brett :)

You can buy a meter on ebay for £15 but not sure if it will be accurate at that price. If I'd thought about it I would have left the exhaust standard. Most tracks have noice limits now. Only race days are free. Harewood is 105 DB

944s are very quiet if they have at least one silencer box in place.

My Turbo has a straight through front pipe and then a Dansk rear box and it tests at 89db at 4000 rpm static. Turbo cars are a bit quieter than N/A but any 944 with at least one silencer will easily pass a static test

I only have the final box as well, so it looks as though I'm out too.

That’s genius.

Who’s up for financing a property development company, focused on buying up cheap property alongside racetracks, arranging residents’ discounts with said tracks, then renting it on as crash pads for petrolheads?

Stunning idea!

Hi :)

You have hit the nail on the head, the "locals" who objected all bought their houses recently and if you buy a house next to a track you have to expect noise...IMHO..

But think of it from their point of view ...IF they can get the track shut down, what would that do to the value of their houses...?

All the best Brett :)

Don't people like that get on ya wick. If you don't like your surroundings then don't buy there. Simple. Don't moan about it after you have bought.

Cheers Paul. So long as your sure! Thinking about it the engine isn't under load when static. :)
