Can some people in the know have a look at the above and see if ti would be money thrown away or if it may be a good base for a cheap first 928.
I am mainly experienced in VWs so 928s can seem a little daunting especially when i read that anything under 2k is a basket case!

Cheers

Hi :)

Actually it doesn't look too bad for the price, but you MUST allow at least a couple of thousand on top for getting it on the road and fixing any problems during the FIRST year....

That rear exhaust box should NOT be sticking out of the bottom of the car by the way....not quite sure why it is but it should not look like that...

All the best Brett :)

Hi :)

Well...look at it this way...it was a £70,000 supercar when new....

Even today there is little that can catch it when you really boot it, it has 160 mph top speed ... it will cruise happily all day long at 150 plus... :)

The problem is that for that price it WILL need work....

IF you went to see it and EVERYTHING worked, all electrics, aircon and everything else, it would be an absolute bargain.... but it wont all work take my word....lol

928 mechanicals are bulletproof generally, but some of the electrics WILL need sorting, if it needs a new cambelt (EVERY 4 years) it will also need a water pump etc.....that will cost you around £500 minimum....you WILL need a service to start with. allow around £300 ish.... etc etc

Also they are NOT very economical lol...thats a 4700 V8 which if you are lucky will give around 15 to 18 around town and maybe 20 to 24 on a run IF you take it easy....which you wont as its such a great car to drive....lol

I am not trying to put you off as 928s are truly phenomenal supercars and amazing to own and drive but you cannot run them on a VW golf type budget....

But as I am famous for saying, when I go out in the morning (daily driver) and that HUGE V8 rumbles into life , it puts a smile on my face all day....

All the best Brett :)

P.S I seriously doubt it will go for that price......I would guess around £3000 to £4000.

Hi :)

Look at this Ebay ad with a video of a 928 drive as although is a 32 valve S4 ,it will give you a good idea of what a 928 is like...

Obviuosly i don't expect it to be "golf money" to run, but i seems to get a good one i will need to sacrifice my bike which i am unsure if i am ready!

I shall carry on my research and get to know the model before i take the plunge.
I am more than competent with a spanner but i know very little about the 928 servicing etc.
And the big job of cambelt I take it is a pretty tricky one?
I will be watching that one though, just in case!

Hi :)

If you are anywhere near Bournemouth I will happily take you for a spin in mine, although its not exactly standard lol :)

If you are a reasonable mechanic then almost all jobs on a 928 are within your range, servicing is very similar to a Rover V8 ..if you have done one of those...

Cambelt/Water Pump is NOT an amateur job though....get it wrong and you are looking at 16 bent valves and possibly new heads or a new engine....

The great thing about owning a 928 is the owners who on this forum and others will help you out with advice or even mechanical help....or tools...

Even thinking about owning one makes you a superior type of human being, so you are one step ahead anyway lol :)

All the best Brett :)

Nice idea to put a video in the ad.

Looks a nice example, but the 928 geek in me noticed that when he revved the engine at about 2:54 into the video, it didn't move at all so the motor mounts will need replacing!

I bought my 928 S4 last August for £5,000 and have spent £2,000 on it since then! But now it's nearly there, and I have a genuine supercar for £7,000. I'd love a Ferrari but would need to save another £10,000 plus and then there's the bills on those, which are higher.
Some jobs you can do yourself, I'm learning all the time. However the cam belt is not for the faint hearted. The main thing I have learnt is that you cannot buy a car like this and not expect to have to spend money on it.

Brett, do you really think £3 - 4 000 for the first one, I noticed there were no photo's of the interior so it's a guessing game as to what that's like, I'm counting down the day's now, pick mine up on Saturday all being well, just hope the weathers not to bad. As luck would have it I've got an RC helicopter to look at just round the corner so hopefully I can kill two birds with one stone and come back with two toy's! :D

Hi :)

Assuming the interior is "reasonable" and I would want to see it first, I would think over 3k yes.... its got an MOT and tax etc.... and even breaking it for spares would bring in well over 2k... god forbid :(

The second one is MUCH better...but that wont go for 3k lol....if it does , I will buy it and resell it....

All the best Brett :)

:) Brett if this is as good as the seller say's it is it would probably be a better bet than the first one, I know it's more money but the difference could soon be eaten up getting the first one sorted - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Stunning1986-PORS ... 3ca979d46e -not sure about the 'Rare' special order interior, not to everyone's taste I should imagine! :)

Hi :)

Yes that looks a very good car, although it would need looking at....

Good point that it is an 86 like mine, the most powerful of all the S2s (310 hp) they were ONLY made for the 86 year....

Bad point.... cam belt was 20,000 ago and doesnt say how long that was, so probably due a belt/pump etc now....

But looks very very nice....

All the best Brett :)

I thought all S2s had 310hp, the difference for the '86 year was that the later ones had the S4 suspension and brakes.

Regarding the first car mentioned in this thread, I notice that it appears to have cup mirrors (not cheap!) and the later wheels, so somebody must have cared for it once, however I'm not so sure about the red paint on the "spider" and that black hose across the top - looks like something other than routine maintenance may have been done on the engine (ignition leads with those holders don't look like S2 ones either?). You'd definitely have to go and have a good look before bidding and the seller has (deliberately?) chosen a short auction period that doesn't give much time to arrange an inspection.

The picture of the rear also makes it look lopsided, but I have a similar problem keeping my horizons level, so that's not necessarily indicative of anything
