Tyres IMO. Cheap crap will not help at all. If it aids the arguement, I lost 1 second dead in 1/4 mile times on my Pug 306 GTi-6 going from Courier Drivers to Toyo T1-Rs. Being scared of wet conditions almost became a thing of the past (I could spin up in 3rd in the wet without trying).

Porker was a similar story. It was on P6000s all round (7 years old). The front didn't grip too hot in most conditions and the backend is still a little lairy. I've put Kumho KU31s on the front (as I want to do a few suspension mods etc.) and even they are a whole step away from the P6000s. The rears will be changed soonish now methinks.

If that's not your problem I'd put my money on the dampers. Most of these cars dampers if original will not be what they once were regardless of how low the mileage of the car is.

I had Kumhos on the rear and P6000 on the front of my S2 when I bought it and although there was plenty of tread on both when I got it the rears would spin or slide in the wet and the fronts which had around 4/5mm of tread would wash out in the slightest damp. I changed all four about 2 years ago for Toyo T1R's which were a revelation, they stopped the tramlining and any tendancy to either slide from the rear or understeer from the front, I put this down to the age of the rubber rather than the quality or tread depth, got all four fitted etc for £320 (255/45/17, 225/40/17).

From my view , some well interesting info on this thread, other folks experiences etc. I am totally with J.J's view of many drivers and of moderate speeding. Some of the foums are littered with folk who think they are better drivers than they are though bragging about there 100 plus exploits. I'm going to wait for the new wheels then try Falkens on the recomendationsd here and report back honestly.

Cheers All

Mas

I think everyone’s nailed your problem right away. Our 944s have an incredibly balanced chassis but to get it to behave as intended you need to keep on top of the tyres and the geometry, in that order.

I’ve never tried Falkens, but can recommend Continental Sport Contact II for decent grip in the wet.

In light of the input from the folk here I thought it only fair to give some feedback re the 944 in the wet with new tyres. As you know I didnt buy the cheepos that were on my car, they came on my car but I was suprised to hear that my handling/traction problem might be down to poor ( brand new) rear tyres.

Today , I went out in exactly the same damp horrible conditions with my new but tatty 16" Cup Ones shod with Goodyear Eagle NCT tyres. I have to say you can't knock those Eagles. They put the power down superbly and the problem was exactly as suggested by some of my more experienced TIPEC bretheren. Very nice change indeed. I will be very carefull what tyres I do buy for my 944 as a result of this experience.

Cheers Mas

Hi,

I'm running Pirelli P Zero Rosso's on the S2. Stick to the road like squashed rabbits! When its wet or damp though, the car gets maximum respect - easy does it.

I must admit I've slowed down a lot over the years since having children. More responsibilty I guess. I try my best to adhere to the speed limits but you soon get people tail gating you when you actually do 30 in a 30.

It is nice though to occassionally open the taps when the roads are quiet and its safe to do so. No unnecessery risks IMO. Keep it shiney side up is my moto. Panel beaters are expensive!
