Hello to you all,
new to this forum and to the Porsche family,last Nov i took the pluge and bought on a whim a 1981 porsche 928s,dark blue with 928reg,17in cup alloys,s4 rear wing,new mich tyres,head gasket and cam belt change and in general good condition,been stored for 4 years so needed a tidy up and good service to go back on the road,but the main problem was no history!!!a big no,no i know but i thought if it turns into a money pit i can strip it and sell the parts seperate and get my money back as it was dirt cheap due to no history.
So far so good,engine is a dream,suspension firm,all electrics work!!!apart from the heater blower is stuck on full no matter what the switch is set at.Just need to give it a full fluid change with filters and in for the MOT ready for march.
What type of engine oil do you guys use,most places say 10w40 semi but i would have thought 20w50 or 15w50 would be better due to the age and miles(35k on dash but probably 135k)
I have always been a motorbike guy,have motoguzzi v11 and honda vfr750 and pretty handy with the spanners,plenty of engine rebuilds done in past so getting my hands dirty on the 928 is a pleasure!!!
One thing i was amazed at was the insurance,£142 fully comp from my motorbike policy on a classic rate,breakdown(important),legal and european green card included and before you think it,i'm only 39!!
Hoping to save this 928 and be back on the road in it come march,it can't come soon enough

Welcome and thanks for saving a 928! Looks very nice in the photos. Fan problems usually fixed by replacing fan resistor pack which is accessed via scuttle area just in front of firewall.

Don't panic him unnecessarily! The flexplate issue applies to S2 autos (1986) onwards. Prior to that the clamp design did not allow the torque tube to move forward.

Thanks to all for the kind welcome and words, i live in Stone,Staffordshire,and hoping to get out to a meet in the summer and mingle with you all,reading through some posts everyone seems very friendly and down to earth
As soon as it gets warmer i will check out the resistor pack as suggested,thanks,and as per the flexi plate,i don't need to worry about that as mine is an S and not an S2 so does not suffer from this,correct?
Once i am happy with the reliability i am planning a trip over to Brittany to see my sister who lives there,as the 928 was designed as a GT car i am hoping this will be perfect for the job,anyone else made any long trips in theirs and how did it go,fuel consumption aside!

Correct - the S has no reputation for flexplate problem.

It's a shame that so few of us (me included) use the 928 for the purpose for which it was designed - crossing continents at sustained high speed. If you have sorted reliability then it will be a wonderful car for the Brittany trip.

I've taken mine abroad twice now; both times to Germany, the second time just past Munich. The only issue I had was the AC packing up once whilst driving back from Dover but apart from that the car performed faultlessly.

It's when you do a trip like that that you realize just how good the 928 is - it really thrives cruising on the autobahn, rather than crawling through city centre traffic. The only thing you may have to watch is that I found it used a lot more oil than expected (although that's partly due to my not taking account of the fact that I was doing the equivalent of three or four months' "normal" mileage in a fortnight!).

The first time I went I added up what it had cost in fuel, the second time I decided to save myself the grief - ignorance is bliss and if you thought about what it was costing it may spoil the enjoyment.
