Saw this on Ebay (nothing to do with me) .... I know water in oil is a problem, but its a clean looking car and probably an 86.5?
I'd buy it if I had the space ....

Paul

Says a lot that the seller is prepared to admit that it's not perfect! Does look clean. Do 928's have the same oil water heat exchanger as a 944?

Hi Paul, Does look like a nice genuine car and the seller does seems honest with the description. £1800 - would it just be a potential head gasket problem-or something else? What sort of money would that be to fix? Maybe a £1000 all in? If that was the case would appear to be a potential good buy-likewise if I had the room it would be of interest to me. Cheers Rob :)

Hi :)

Its a big risk at £1000....

It COULD cost several THOUSAND to fix if it needs heads as well as head gasket.... :(

Hes fairly honest (but on ebay you have to be) but it should be a LOT cheaper....he knows whats wrong...after all a Snap-on head/block test only takes 10 minutes......

If I were nearer I would go test it lol....then bid...maybe....:)

P.S I also think hes a dealer....look at the key in the door. dealers use cardboard tags, owners use keyrings.....also hes hidden the drivers bolster in pictures...as usual for a dealer...:(

All the best Brett :)

Hi Rob/J.J,
I am sure Brett will be along shortly with an opinion on what it could be ... I don't know them well enough yet to comment too much on the heat exchangers etc.
I do like it a lot though ... the red interior is unusual and looks nice (although not to everyones tastes I am sure - it must be rare?). And the mileage low!

I could buy it, but havent finished my own and no space :-( Plus the wife would kill me.... probably twice!

If it stays at a Grand I might have to buy it!

Regards
Paul

Just saw your reply Brett ... I am sure your right. I guess it is at a price where worth more in parts.
Does the head replacement really cost that much in labour? The parts could be picked up for very little from a used specialists?

Regards
Paul
PS - Notice a LHD S4 just gone on today at a little over £2k with starting problem. Could be a 53 relay and a cheap fix like mine, OR ...

Hi Paul :)

You wont get a pair of heads if needed cheaply or even at all...not for an 86 S2..they are as rare as rocking horse poop....

Labour is expensive if paying someone, and a head gasket kit is not cheap either....

Think head gasket only plus labour (if paying) around £1000 to £1500...

If head needed...add £500 to £1000 ...IF you can find any....

So a possible total of £2500 to £3000.... :(

All the best Brett :)

Bret do 928's have an oil water heat exchanger. Or has it been overheated & stuffed?

I was thinking It could be just the radiator that has failed.....but the listing says it's had a new one. My 928 had the head gaskets done and the bill came to £3500, fortunately emptying the wallet of a previous owner and not me!

Hmmm, my guess regarding the card keyfob-it could just back from the MOT (the guy does say this) and hes not taken the card off.. a decent trader would take this off for photos wouldn't they? Despite eveything it still looks cheap to me - even as a scrapper. If I was a gambling man 73000 miles-full MOT..interior looks clean to me- its got to be worth a punt... How much to get someone to drop a replacement engine in? wash it then sell it for £5K.. Blimey its tempting... :D

That is outrageous? £3500 ... some of these garages live on another planet. Thats a months wages to most people. I bet it was in for about 3 days!
Bit like the £900 the other day to change the shocks and springs (labour only) that was discussed.

Scary stuff...

Regards
Paul

Hi :)

928s have a radiator with an oil cooler as part of it, which CAN go....its a good thought....the Snap-On test would define which had gone...rad/cooler or head gasket/heads...

All the best Brett :)

Mmmmm ... I will sleep on it. I am too scared to discuss with the wife at the moment. Doesn't sort out the space issue. My neighbours already have a contract out on me for having too many cars!

Hi :)

Good thinking but I seriously doubt you would get 5k for any S2 with the market as it is at the moment..maybe 3k to 4k max :(

Engine for an 86 S2 would be around 2k inc labour to "drop in" ..thats IF you can find one.....which is doubtful...

All the best Brett :)
