I was sat in the kitchen watching my wife making some 'Caramelised balsamic and red onion tarts with goat's cheese' (what different strange thing is your wife / partner making this week? ) and telling her about my trip to the local scrapyard today. She turned and showed me a bowl and asked "is this 6" diameter?". "Yes" I said, "that's six inches" . She carried on with her work...... What? it's not my fault if she hasn't got a ruler so she'll never know it's only four inches - if I showed her a six inch bowl she'll only be disappointed

Anyway, I digress, back to the subject in question -

I called in the scrapyard today to find some bits for my daughter's Mk3 Golf SE. There must have been over a hundred cars lined up there. They were all scrappage cars. The guy said that he had recently taken a 928 in and that it had already been dispatched to Hungary - where it can legally go back on the road.... that's the end of the good news.

I'm looking for a 'runabout' car and have a budget <£2000. The following is just a few of the cars that I could quite happily have driven away as 'good cars' - that means no or minimal rust, really decent interiors, and decent mileage.

'N' Audi Coupe 2.6, 'L' Audi A6 2.6 estate, 'S' Audi A4 1.8T, 'T' Golf Mk4, 'P' Toyota Camry V6 auto, 'F' Toyota MR2, 'H' Mercedes 190E, five or six Mk3 Golfs, 'D' Mercedes 230E, an anniversary edition 'T' MGF - black with burgundy leather.

Then there were loads of 'kids cars', you know the ones, Corsas, Clios, Polos etc etc, and a few Hyundai coupes. The guy said that one of the Corsas only had 26000 miles on it.

I just think that it is (nearly) all a terrible waste, and so stupid. You can buy a scrappage car for spares only, but the scrappy has to 'de-tox' it first by removing cats and exhausts and fluids. You can use every part of the car as a spare on another car, yet you cannot put the actual scrappage car on the road... it's bollocks really isn't it!

Sorry for the rant, but it just really annoys me to see such waste. Most of those cars will outlast the tin boxes they have been replaced with.

Now, better go and see how the wife's getting on with the 6" 'Caramelised balsamic and red onion tarts with goat's cheese'......

A friend of mine rescued a 944 from the scrapage scheme when the dealer managed to persuade the owner that the car was too good to scrap. The previous owner then advertised it and got more than £2000 for it and the new owner saved a 944 in quite a rare dark green metallic from the crusher.

You can buy scrappage cars back from the scrappy so long as they are not going on the road. One of Andy's mates rescued a solid guards pink 924 from the clutches of the scrap man to turn it into a race /track car.
