Well done on the commitment to keep another classic on the road. I'm with you, I can easily justify spending £'s on the 944. She may spring leaks every couple of weeks, be temperamental on cold mornings and have a few car park scars but for those moments when all works in harmony and she rewards you for that spirited drive it's all worth it :D As we're all telling on how much we've spent then £4k for car, £2.5k on essential mechanical works straight away and JMG excellent warranty (which he kept to above and beyond :thumbleft: ) and a further £4k on modifying and paintwork. Yikes wish I hadn't just done that now  :?

Enjoy the car's

Andy

Hey! I thought mine was the shed :D

Well done getting it sorted, even it was for an eye-watering sum

I thought i'd spent alot of money (about £1000 so far), but as I mainly do the work myself I must have saved myself a small fortune, although its been a steep learning curve at times. I just need to do something about the paintwork now

My bills are mostly parts. 2K for the head & water pump before fiting!

RH44 you were not lucky. The early cars have cheaper parts & have a lower market value as not everyone is comfortable with the driving position. I think the good ones are very under valued & they make a much better starter Porsche than a tired S2. But everybody wants the S2.

John you said this before & it is wrong. Number plate legislation is a bare minimum up to 2001 & before that most things are OK for the MOT. Mine has passed 2 MOTs now with the plates that are not the latest standards & they are OK.

I don't have a bee in my bonnet about number plates Jim, it's just that I am a very factual person - and I'm not wrong. Put what you like on your car - however, read the DVLA rules and you will see that your plates are also illegal (because of the badge on the left side). The reason they pass MOTs is usually because of a friendly person turning a blind eye. Cars registered before 1973 can have the black and white plates.

John, factual you maybe, but why bother to type about legal number plates on someones pride & joy? That is anal or bee in the bonnet call it what you will & isn't the first time as I pointed out.
The MOT testers are pragmatic & know that if asked we'd change them & change them back afterwards. I & loads of others don't give a monkey's what you think, I don't ask your opinion & I suspect the DVLA don't either. I suspect you were one of these guys that was reporting people on the BetterDriving Website for illegal number plates. They are perfectly legible & in fact 100% legal as to font etc. other than the side badging. Which is probably why I & loads of others haven't been stopped. Would these plates stop you reading it quickly if hit & run or similar? Of course not hence why no one cares.

Gordon. Thought you were tee total! If I was sober I would have bought what I set out to buy. Would never have had my best ever overtake. or 1000 other memorys of 944 ownership! :alien: Like going into a corner shop & buying all there bottled water just to get home

Plates on my car are illegal. Show plates. Have the Porsche badge were GB should be. Never been a problem.

Wrong, and I resent your comments Jim. I've never heard of the website you refer to. If I have any problems I go straight to my contacts and get it sorted - being a Homewatch Co-ordinator brings useful contacts and benefits. You're responding like a spoilt child who has been told that they are in the wrong but doesn't want to hear it. Like you say, nobody cares, I certainly don't, but there's no point in putting false information into the public domain just to make yourself feel better Jim.

As you know I always say "each to their own" - religion, sexual preference, politics, badges on number plates, etc etc. As a financial adviser of twenty years I have met loads of people who are either fiddling benefits or evading income tax - or both. I always tell them, factually of course Jim, how and why they are in the wrong and that they should not be claiming benefits or should be declaring income for tax purposes etc etc. I tell them that now I have pointed it out to them it is up to them what they do with the information. I do not go and grass people up. I cannot make people do things, but the honest ones consider the downside of being dis-honest and stop claiming, or declare the income to the inland revenue. I do not lose clients because of telling them what they don't want to hear, but I don't do any business with the ones who don't want to conform - therefore not putting myself at risk of being accused of being dishonest myself.

So based on that theory - your number plates are illegal Jim - full stop. I don't care, but at least you know they are (you already knew) and how you treat the information is up to you.

Sod's law says you'll get pulled up now by some copper who hasn't done enough tickets this month......

I'll finish by saying that they do look nice though :)

John, if you say you don't care why mention Diamondblues the other day, why comment on mine previously?
Spoilt child moi, never! I know they push the edges of the law,but I don't care as do 99.9% of the population. And I've never as highlighted in bold spread false information into the public domain. They have passed at least 2 MOTs never raised a comment apart from people who like them. Which is fact. I have a spare TR7V8 set at home which are beyond the law for a pre-87 car & can change them in 5 minutes. Do I need to no, been followed regularly by Traffic cars (Kent traffic HQ is 10 minutes from home) & they don't care either.

You pays your money and you takes your choice.... Plates are as dodgy as driving without a seat belt, breaking the speed limit and various other ghastly misdemeanours. And quite frankly, I don't give a f*ck. I want the plates, I know they aren't kosher, I'm happy to pay a fine if - and only if - I get in trouble and it doesn't bother me.

We all drive our own cars and make our own choices about them - we will live and die by our decisions and as we are not a communist state it is really irrelevant. Spend what you want on your car, stick what you want on your number plate, the thing we have in common is an appreciation of the marque - if you can't agree on that you shouldn't be here.

Any more bullshit and I'm off to but a Prius.

Fight the power.

Now just hold on a minute with the wild accusations.....

I don't think anybody on this site would break the speed limit, let alone even think of committing such a ghastly misdemeanour

As for the guy driving a Prius, speeding whilst not wearing a seat belt, on his mobile phone, displaying dodgy number plates with a 'save the planet' badge on left side - he should have the book thrown at him for buying a Prius

The best bumper sticker I ever saw came free with a copy of Loaded magazine in the late 1990's - it read "I'm Pissed And I've Got A Gun".

Exciting as all the banter has been, I just wanted to say well done for saving another 944 from the scrap yard. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Sure you probably didn't intend to spend the amount you did on getting it sorted but all credit to you. I know you could apply the argument of you could have bought a minter for that kind of money but you weren't to know.

Incidentally, I use my 944 S2 as a daily driver. I would consider it to be in excellent condition but that doesn't stop me using mine daily. Its there to be used, abused and cherished.

Sir, I salute you. :brave:
