I'd like to change the exhaust on my 85 S2 so that it releases a little more character from the engine. I'd be interested to know of other owners' experiences with this. I'm considering a new rear muffler but also adding x pipes.

Hi :)

I have done all this from start to finish...

I.E from standard S2 Exhaust system to full Anderson Race system...

Ok...first...

I put on a Richard Armstrong/Paul Anderson set of X-Pipes (basically a big X ) at the front, it replaces front boxes, THATS WORTH around 15 to 20 hp EXTRA...and around an extra 3 to 5 Decibels of noise...more V8 like soundwise...

Then I fitted a rear RMB (Rear Muffler Bypass) thats a pair of straight through pipes joined together that replace the rear giant kidney shaped standard box....thats worth around maybe 1 to 3 hp but a LOT more noise...think around 105 to 110 DB in total with the front X-Pipe....lol but a GREAT V8 sound :)

I still have that RMB for an S2 by the way if you want to make me an offer...

Then I got really silly....Paul Anderson and I decided that as I needed as LITTLE backpressure as possible for my Nitrous, we fitted a twin 3 inch race system straight off his race car lol...

What that gave me was NO front boxes (just the X Pipe) we then removed the middle resonators (the little flat boxes in the middle) and finally at the rear we removed my RMB and replaced with a new straight through S4 type rear box....I say S4 type as it comes out STRAIGHT backwards instead of the corner (S2) so Paul cut a lovely semi-circular hole in the rear PU for it to exit....I winced a bit at that but Paul cut a perfect hole in a few seconds lol...

Sooo...that left me an X-Pipe at the front , Twin 3 inch Stainless Race pipes all the way to the rear with no boxes at all apart from the new S4 type straight through one....

HP extra...hmmm as a guess...around 30 maybe....

Noise extra....I have a decibel meter so that I can be precise on...at 7000 revs....130 DB...Minimum (my DB meter only goes to 130) 6000 revs 119 Db,,,

It sounds absolutely amazing but HUGELY loud, I have to be extremely careful around town (daily driver) but its worth it...

So to answer your question...if you want more noise go for an RMB first (1 to 3 hp)...

If you want extra power (15 to 20hp) and a little more noise...go for X-Pipes...

If you want Noise AND Power.....go for both....

If you wanted to go all the way and copy my system, I have no doubt Paul would build you one , but it would be very expensive as mine was a one off....

Hope this helps :)

All the best Brett :)
