Hi All,

This topic may have been covered already bit here goes... I have one of the newer style photocard driving licences. The photo ID card is up for renewal in December - not everyone knows that these things expire.

Now to renew your photo ID card, the DVLA will relief you of £20. First off, I think this is yet another stealth tax brought in by the government. Secondly, there appears to be no way round this.

A friend of a friend of a friend told me that he got round this by filling in the change of address section on his licence. He changed it back to his parents address claiming he had seperated from his partner. He waited a few months then filled in the change of address section again back to his current home address. If anyone asks why, he says 'We're trying to work things out etc etc'.

So my question is, does this scenario work or is it a load of old cobblers? I don't like the idea of having to part with £20 but its better than £1000 fine that they could impose on you. It would work out at £2 a year when spread over the 10 year period. I know it seems petty but its the principle of the matter. The government takes £'s here and there, but before you know it you're trousers are round your ankles and there shafting you from behind!!! :(

Ben :bounce:

Change of details is free, but you a still need to update the photo every 10 years and pay the fee for that.

Passports cost a lot more to renew (I think. it's late and I'm tired), so why does everyone whinge about driving licence? Do motorists think they're special or something?*

*Think I've been on Pistonheads too much, heard a lot about this recently.

If only it was so easy to obtain a clean licence.

My next door neighbour mentioned this to me a few weeks back.

His wife passed her test and within days, reversed into a car across the road. She's never driven AT ALL since that day, and now has to renew a licence she doesn't even need,

Me? paper, and refusing to update. Even the advertising says "Hey, update to a photocard and be able to update your details on line". But I haven't any details to update, that's why I don't need one, so that's a bit of a paradox then isn't it.

In fact, we refuse to move home so we don't have to pay this. :D

As for passports, they are an identity scheme enabling the holder to travel, and therefore that requires a photo. I have to admit thought, they are VERY expensive imo, about £80 now. Why?
I have a paper driving licence which gives me exactly the same benefits as those with a photo - no more, no less.

Yup like mine even if it is in eight pieces through age! Causes great amusement when hiring cars abroad
I do not want a useless photocard at all & I will hang onto my green one until forcibly removed from hand!
