Do not under any circumstance use a trigger spray bottle with a small amount of petrol in it to soak the residue a patch at a time and then scrape it off with a credit card. You will ruin the credit card. You have been warned.

Lighter fluid is a good adhesive remover (although it is petrol, but without fuel additives). Isopropol alcohol (available from a chemist) is good as well for cleaning sticky residue and grease before sticking the replacement stuff on. For a bonnet though, I reckon a specific adhesive remover is the best as anything flammable is a major risk when used over a large area. (However, if you inspect the burnt out wreck afterwards, you'll probably find no trace of the sticky adhisive stuff...)

Auto Glym make a tar spot remover which is excellent for removing glue deposits left after removing a sticker or decal, but at £4.99 for a small bottle it could be expensive to clear the underside of your bonnet.I too have scraped off the bulk of the soundproofing material and have the residue left but as I dont spend much time looking at the underside of my bonnet it can stay like that!! :)

I used a heat gun and PLASTIC paint scraper. Made fairly quick work of it, and cleaned up the few small "stubborn" patches (and did a complete rubdown) with mineral spirits.

Left a good tack free surface, with no marring of the paint.
