Gave up trying to find a blue replacement leather wheel for 928 and have bought a 944 wheel which hopfully will arrive in next few days.

A couple of questions if I may.

1) How do I remove the centre pad to access the nut? If I pull I just set the horn off. Should I pull harder?
2) Has anyone changed a boss over and is it tricky? Do i need any special tools?
3) Any tips on blue leather polish to bring it up to scratch? Do I go to Clarkes??

I have no idea if a 944 wheel is the same but I did not think ANY of the bosses were removable, I thought they were all built into the wheel....

i don't think a 944 wheel will fit a 928 either !!

Just yank hard to pull off pad covering nut. To mute the horn just pull the fuse (or relay - I can't remember if horn fused). Bear in mind the pad is attached to horn contact with spade connector, so don't pull so hard that this is damaged.

Wheel is tight on splines, so don't loosen the nut (27mm?) all the way before you pull wheel off splines, or you risk injury face-butting the wheel! Have someone hold the wheel while you loosen the nut, so you don't damage the steering lock.

Good tip for removing any steering wheel - ask me how I know

Use leaher dye to refurbish the wheel but make sure you get the correct blue as there are more than one.

Just wanted to check before I snapped some clip or something worse. I will pull harder then!

On the boss I have heard it can be done, but the process is unclear. Have heard it done to a 964 wheel changed and fitted to a 928.

Perhaps all will be clear when the 944 one arrives.

Will check out the usual suspects on the dye then. Just thought would ask in case anyone had any tips on blue polish.

If wheel comes in time will have a crack over the weekend.

Booking her in for an MOT at the end of the month. I am going to be happy with less than 10 failure points! Then off to Paul A's for a cam belt and pump change if nothing too serious found in the MOT.

Forgot to add ... good tip about leaving the nut on. I too have had a steering wheel in the face and a fat lip!

Would be very interested to know the details on the leather dye?

I bought mine off e-bay from a supplier that listed all the Porsche trim colours.
One two occasions I had colour mixed by the local branch of that big leather restoration centre. They claim do loads of cars and be able to match anything as long as you take a sample along, However on one both occasions the match was crap. One both colours I was able to buy a good match from the internet. It was more expensive though. The leather restoration centre was able to mix me a larger amount of one of the bottles I'd ordered off the net.

Thanks for the info ... will check them out. I need a bit of dye for the bolster as well. Although not that bad considering.
944 wheel arrived today, but late home so will have a fiddle tomorrow now.

Oh poo! The boss is riveted on to the wheel with rivets that look like they came from a ship yard.
I dont think its a good idea to drill them off and replace with nuts/bolts?
I guess the hunt for a wheel continues!

Anyone need a dark blue 944 wheel??

Horn pad is a different size as well.
Interestingly the Boss has a 911 part number (on the 944 wheel)
