I know this will have been covered somewhere on the forum at some point but I can't find it at the mo.

I bought an '88 924S which I knew had suffered some sort of engine problem as the belt cover is missing, the plugs have been removed and teeth are clearly missing from the cambelt. What's the best procedure for assessing the internal damage as I obviously want to avoid causing any more damage by being heavy handed?

Two options, put a new cambelt on and do a compression check, if OK start it up. Or lift head check valves & maybe clean seats, reassemble & replace belt & then start it up.

Cheers Jim, that's a great help.

Is Porscheshop likely to be cheapest for the belts, rollers, tensioners, etc. as I will change the lot or can anyone suggest another source?

Try GSF or Bert Gear. I got all the belts for and tensioners for my S2 for £160 all in (Dayco belts, INA tensioners).

I'd do a compression test too, and start. If you hear a loud tapping you'll need to get the head refurbished.

I've been told that Frazerpart have some good deals so I'd add them to the list.

Fraserpart do indeed. They are probably one of the cheapest people in the country for a clutch (GSF on 'trade' wanted £424 compared to FP's £430. When I rang up about cambelts they wanted £200 for an S2 (that's the 5 rollers, and Contitech Belts). The price I payed was from GSF. Deciphering what you need can be tricky though! Let me know if you wish to get it from GSF and I'll help you out on the description.

FP's help is also very great over the telephone, something which you may not get from GSF.
