First off, hello to all.
I have been an admirer of the 928 for some years now and i am very tempted to buy one.
I have heard mixed opinions on a budget but my budget is limited!
I have also read and heard that they can really eat some money up!
Not scared of a bit of work as i am fairly handy with the spanners, as i ahve had a love hate relationship with old golfs for as long as i can remember and have recently put a supercharged engine in my mk2.

So..back to the point!
I have linked a couple of cars below, one of which is more than cheap but i imagine needs a couple of grand spent on it and the other claims to need nothing but again, fairly cheap considering.

the really cheap one doesn't look too bad! But, as a non runner who knows whats wrong! Electrics would suggest they need work.

Really, i am looking for guidance and advice before i venture into 928 ownership.
Am i basically wasting time/money to buy a fixer upper?

I know most will disagree with me, but the cheap one is a lot of car for the money and worth twice and more than that for the parts alone.
Of course it might have something pretty serious wrong with it, but even spending a grand is going give you a cheap car and you would be unlucky if it cost much more. (to get the engine running)
I know Brett always says the engines are bomb proof.
However other things may well need doing as it has sat so long ... brakes etc.
Wonder if miles are right?
It looks straight but hard to tell from pics.
The interior looks later? But might be me. I know the seats changed around 85, but they look (again hard to say for certain) pretty good.
Body work costs a fortune, so if its straight without aluminum rot that is the bargain of the century?
I would buy it myself if I had the space no question.

Blimey...£550 that looks like a bargain to me! As somebody else has said, it may not be worth doing up but at that price you could sell it for parts and make some money.
The other one looks OK. Whatever 928 you buy is going to need something doing to it. I paid £5000 for mine two months ago and have spent well over £1000 already.
There was a white one on ebay for £3000 and I'm surprised nobody bought it as it looked mint. I don't know if it sold, might be worth a look.
£3000 seems to be top whack for the earlier version. The S4 commands more, they seem to start at £3000ish. Some say the earlier version is a better bet as it is less complicated.

The aircon rarely works. I took time to find one with it working, only to have it fail within three weeks of buying the car. A lot of people don't bother with it.

The first one is older than the second but i seriously doubt the second ones mileage (looking at the engine)

The second one is VERY VERY cheap but its a non runner It might cost a few hundred to get running or a few THOUSAND ! , PARTICULARLY as it has no MOT either...

Having said that its worth a LOT more than its price especially with 2 sets of wheels in parts alone....

I don`t want to put you off as a 928 is a true Supercar .... if it were me , I would probably buy both, as one is an instant driver and you could break the other for parts to pay for whatever you needed on the running 928.

Finally , my famous saying....

When I go out in the morning (daily driver) and I start my 928 and that HUGE V8 rumbles into life, it puts a smile on my face that lasts all day

So go look at them and then decide....

Where are you in the UK as I would happily go with you to inspect a 928 if its in the South or look at one for you if its near me.... (that will apply to a lot of 928 owners in various parts of the country)

928 owners are really friendly people.....lol

Thanks for all the advice. I am a bit green when it comes to 928s. So any advice is welcomed.
Think i will give the cheap one a ring as really don't see how i can lose money on it.
There was a real shed on ebay and that was up for 800 and it really was a basket case.

I am in Southampton, and the cheapo is 60 miles from me, not sure where.
Could use it as a start point to then get another and make a good one.
As far as air con goes, never had a car with it so not overly fussed! Would probably be easier/cheaper to remove it and get an extra 1mpg!
I shall give the cheapo a buzz thats if its not been snapped up.
There is another one on ebay, silver for 2600 but its been sat around a while too, looks tidy though but miles from me.

It's possible to buy a good 928 and then spend £5,000 on it. I read this somewhere (in fact the article said £10,000...) and thought it was unlikely, but it would be easy to do.
So let's say you buy what looks like a really nice 928 S4....and decide to do all the catch-up maintenance jobs at once. Full service, new engine mountings, sump gasket, aircon repair/conversion, 4 new tyres, respray stone chipped front end, flex plate check, cam belt/water pump change, sundry electrical jobs and replacement of broken parts like engine undertray, replace engine bay hoses, new thermostat, 4 new shock absorbers, etc.

However the car is OK without all these jobs, so you just get the cam belt done, tighten the sump bolts for now, and change the oil yourself. Total spend £700.

The other things can be done over time. Somebody suggested one major "project" per year and that's great advice. One year...new tyres. Next year...new shocks etc.

you all might want to pop down to the tipec meet at the Cerlew next month, there are more 928 there than anything else !!!!

probably saved me a fortune though!

The bidding has ended on that S4 near me. Opening bid was 2750 and nobody bid so its is still for sale.

I wonder why values are so low? There are plenty of other cars like these where the repair bills can be frightening, and they are worth fortunes. Jaguar and Aston Martin to name a couple. And the 928 doesn't go rusty!

Imagine an Aston DB6 starting at £2750 and no reserve....I'll bet there would be a bid or two, even if it was a basket case. I've seen average Jaguar MK2's make £10,000 needing another twenty K to make them right.

I recall seeing a 911 targa that had been stripped to the shell in Abbey Porsche.
The thing was like lace curtains but people will do silly things because they are pretty and worth money.

Sadly the 928 is not as pretty so the interest is not there.
If I was employed I'd buy that S4 myself.
Seen it go on the dragstrip and there is nothing wrong with its engine.
How many +250000 milers would you dare take on the strip?
Travelled back up country in convoy together at 100+ too.
