I had an issue on my 944 - pump wouldnt come off easily and snapped some studs? Cost a fortune to fix. Another reason to change with the belt each time? Or perhaps not to tempt fate!

Yup various indies have spoken of this. JM talks of engine out on really bad ones :o

One of mine was very rusty and did indeed snap on removal.

Here's a pic of the new ones:

Hi :)

OPC labour rate is set NATIONALLY at £120 per hour...although they "can" discount it for older models...

Ummm....how do they know your water pump is ok ?? Are they psychic ?

All the best Brett :)

£75 per hour is the price for the pre 996 porsches, i must admit i was a little surprised about the water pump altho' it visually looks very shiney and new, i think the later pump are more robbust and don't have the plastic impellor

Never heard of any 944 having a plastic impeller, their was a TSB on water pumps but only on early pre-1987 944s & all replacements are now to the latest spec.

This doesn't compute at all.

A few years back Porsche responded to the 928 getting long in the tooth by reducing (sometimes dramatically) its parts costs.

If 944 parts have suddenly been raised then I think there's going to be a heck of a fuss

That makes my new head seem very cheap. Fitted with new belts it will be £250 less than your service! & it's gas flowed! Bet opc would charge more for a standard one!

Fortunetely (or unfortunately) however you look at it, I can't afford any labour time full stop (OPC or Independent or even "man down the road"), I can afford only my own time to do the jobs that need doing and then eventually other jobs to upgrade my car!

What concerns me is what I've just read about parts - the 944 is a classic so prices for parts have gone up?? Is this really right and is just seems to be way off the mark!

Most people I know like myself with classic cars can't really afford to be taking cars in for work to be done anyway and therefore do work themselves.

I really feel if this it right about parts that we should ALL be saying something about this.

Nicola

As I understand it prices on 944 bits are changing because of 1. Exchange rate, 2. supply issues.
This is meaning some parts are cheaper, other bits are much more expensive & some will be NLA. Generally I find most bits reasonably priced, if it is excessive then I'll find a s/h one. A lot of the consumables are available from the indies anyway.

well picked car up today, and on checking invoice found loadsa discounts on prices, but on driving car temp gauge runs higher than previously and exhaust pipe very sooty after a quick blast (never sooty previously), wifey says exhaust was smoking when i overtook her giving some beans (about 4500+ rpm in 3rd) altho' she said it was grey/black rather than blue smoke any ideas ?

Temp will read higher with a new stat, quite a well known thing. Have they overfilled the sump?

no waterpump or stat fitted, they have changed oil type from mobil 1 0/50 (i think) to formula RS 10/60 semi synthetic which never dropped below 4 bar even at tickover, says 4l on invoice, checked level and ok (altho very clear as new)
