Lo all, I just read the excellent guide in all torque 77 re sunroof failure/repair and though its far from an urgent job , this spurred me in to having a look in the roof lining over the weekend to see if my 'cogs' were knackered. Having looked in the roof I see of course that my sunroof mechanism is slightly different and isnt cog driven at all though some of the components are basically the same.

I also have discovered my car is December 85 not 86 as in my sig (oops).

I need the two raising arms as the 'nipples' have broken on them and I need to renew the cables too as one has snapped off the raising arm where it is crimped and the other cable doesnt move though the motor whirs away (so im guessing its broke the other end). These raising arms are different from the later ones I see as they have no 'ratcheted side' but just crimp on to a cable. Clearly they still fail though so the cogs were presumable an
' improvement ' that didnt really improve

Am I right in thinking Porsche is going to have to be where I get these or might I at least get the lifting arms from a porsche being broken ( does anyone have them ?) .

Also has anyone actually repaired an earlier sunroof and got any practical tips. I looked initially for the motor in the boot and could hear it but it didnt exactly jump out at me even under the carpet , having read ther clarkes manual im sure I'll find it next weekend :P

Regards Mas

Hi,

I wrote the article for the TIPEC magazine. The 944 sunroof operation is massively complex and I had to try to compress the sunroof operation into a 2 page article from a 12 page A4 document. I based my article on the source listed below, as well as advice from others on the forum and my experience of doing the job.

http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticle ... unroof.htm

Hope this helps. The article is more geared up for the later car but there are references in it with differences between the two. Oh yeah, try your OPC for sunroof parts. My local OPC in Leeds worked out cheaper than a lot of the internet suppliers.

Cable inners & gears can be bought new from opc for very little. It you need the outer then it comes with the motor & you don't want to know how much they are. I got the expensive bits from Porscheapart.

J.J what do you mean by cable inners , the Porsche parts man didnt have any idea and I dont blame him. He just sent me a photo copy of the wrong sunroof by fax ( the later one) , even though I provided my vin number .

I need the two cables from the gear box in the middle they run in what look like copper pipes and I need the two raising arms that raise the roog
( no cogs on my earlier sunroof as the cables crimp on to the arms)

Cheers Mas

Give Porscheapart a ring for the arms. JM garage will order you the cables if there available. They will know what your talking about. I gave up trying to order parts from porsche long ago as theres nobody that can remember working on the cars & if the part comes & is wrong they still expect you to pay for it!
